Didn't know where else to post this. We got a gas bill this morning (3 Dec - 7 Feb: 66 days) and it's come in at €445. Apparently we used 7000 units during this period. Heating is the only use we have for gas, and we had this on max 3/4 hours a day. Is this normal? The bill is not estimated, and during the period of August/September last year we used 700 units. Obviously the heating wasn't used much in summer, but have we really increased our usage 10 fold?! Is there anything that could be causing such an increase in units used? This works out more than my rent

looks like it could be a mistake and someone messed up with your reading?

19 Dec - 14 Feb used 4,840 kWh gas, totaling €330 (VAT incl)
    (20y semi, single glazed, 3 bed, 2 adults, 2 kids, 1 dog)

Could be that the previous bill was estimated low, and now you're in effect paying for the last 4 months' usage?

exactly, when was the last actual reading taken for the bill?

Why not just read the meter today and compare it with the last reading on the bill. If the figures are close enough then the bill is probably right. If they're way out ring them and ask for another bill to be issued based on today's reading.

Perhaps your boiler needs a service?

Assuming it's a legit bill, engage with your supplier. I'm going to assume Bord Gais is your supplier. If so, they are exceptionally helpful and understanding. They will allow you to setup a payment plan to spread out the payments.

Thanks all. We can pay it, I was just wondering if it's normal to be this high. Previous bill was €300, October-November, and I thought that was a huge leap. Hypothetically, if we kept the heat on 24/7 it would probably work out as much. I'm in a rented house and it doesnt have great insulation, but asides from freezing is there anything else that can be done to keep it down?

Instead of keeping it on max for 3-4 hrs a day and then allowing it to cool down over 20hrs maybe try keeping it constant on on the lowest setting? Might work.

Layer your clothes. You'd be surprised at how layers will keep the heat in. The "science" is that air between layers act as an insulator.

Update: we have discovered that a pipe outside has a hole and has been spilling out hot water for the last couple of months. Explains the increase and the tepid showers  Expensive lesson learnt.

At least yer bills will go down once that pipe is fixed
