    in the leaving cert 2013 applied maths exam marking scheme,it says that the time if the first part of the journey is half(t-t1) ,how do you get that/why?

    You're going to have to be a bit more specific..

    But I assume you're talking about Q1 b in Higher Level?

    It says the total time is t seconds and the time spent travelling at a speed of v ms-¹ is t1.

    That means the sum of the time spent accelerating and the time spent decelerating is (t-t1).

    Its acceleration from 0 to v was f ms-² and its deceleration from v to 0 was -f ms-² meaning the time spent accelerating was the same as the time spent decelerating so you divide (t-t1) by two.

    t = total time
    t1 = time spent at constant velocity
    t-t1 = sum of the time spent accelerating and the time spent decelerating.
    ½(t-t1) = the time spent accelerating
    ½(t-t1) = the time spent decelerating.
