Air ambulance makes 'heavy' landing in Tipperary

It has emerged that none of the crew on board an Aer Corps air ambulance were injured after the helicopter was forced to make an emergency landing in County Tipperary.

The aircraft came down near Borrisoleigh in County Tipperary at around 3pm.

There were three staff, but no patients, on board at the time of the accident.

A spokesperson for the Defence Forces has confirmed that the helicopter was involved in a "heavy but controlled landing".

It is understood the chopper had clipped and ESB power line.

The Athlone based Air Corps ambulance had only begun operations 15 days ago.

It is understood the helicopter may have hit a power line and was forced to land a couple of kilometres outside Borrisoleigh on the main Nenagh road shortly after 2pm.

The helicopter was on an air ambulance mission to pick up a patient in Borrisoleigh at the time. There were three people on board, but there were no injuries.

The patient was subsequently transferred by ambulance to the Mid Western Regional Hospital Limerick.

A statement from the Department of Defence says the Air Accident Investigation Unit in the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport has been informed of the incident.

It added that the extent of damage to the helicopter is yet to be determined.

Contingency plans are being put in place to resume the Emergency Aeromedical Service as soon as possible.

Anyone have any more info about this?

Highly unlikely, airframe is well twisted by all accounts. IAC do not have a track record of replacing broken airframes. Usually a case of make do with what you have got.

I'm just very grateful to whoever that the crew are OK.

The IAC can buy another helicopter, buying people is somewhat harder.

    Agreed.

However its about time defence budgets and particularly the air corps, took attrition losses and replacements into account.
