The course itself was beautiful but very demanding and for those technically minded among you I rode a top gear of 54x11 and a lowest gear of 42x21 with Reynolds Razor 92mm wheels which were proven faster than a disk wheel on our recent trip to the wind tunnel.

The climb was a lot steeper than I imagined and I didn’t have the right gear for that.
Sounds like Roche/Reynolds may have been spot on with the choice of wheel.

Discs are generally considered fast at high yaw angles (in crosswinds and/or at low speeds) where deep section wheels tend to stall, but they are also heavier.

On a flat, fast time trial the weight isn't important but although the yaw angles will tend to be lower I'd guess that most teams would just choose discs so that they can forget about the wind conditions and concentrate on the really important things like stuffing cotton wool up the riders noses.

Here's a long, complicated paper if anyone can be bothered to read and summarise.

we should ring him and tell him to do the TT course again with a full disc just to satisfy our curiosity (its a rest day after all)

Does anyone know if the wind picked up and the temperature dropped slightly between the time Cancellara went off and Froome/wiggins took to the road.
That would account for some early gains and then once passed the first time check , the adrenalin starts pumping and Froome Wiggins know they have it if they push on.
Perhaps if Cancellara had come after Froome and Wiggon he may have pulled it out of the bag.

Also remember even Wiggins and Froomes time was still outside the record time for a >40K ITT, set by Millar in 2003 (open to correction) .

I dont know if theres the same quality of contenders to match Froome and Wiggins, Cadel is pushing on, tony Martin was banjaxed, Cancellara has come back from injury, theres no up and coming ITTs, lots of teams have lost their GC contender and therefore lost interest.

I think wiggins and Froome are clean and won the ITT but it wasnt the most competitive of ITTs .
I also think coming to road racing from another sport or cycling aspect (ala Froome wiggins) at a later point than some riders who are road racing from the age of 12 is better, the body is stronger and can reach new levels once the dedication is there.

The Brits regard Conti level as amatuer. You often see the likes of McNally (SKT) talk about wanting to turn pro (ie pro conti or world tour).
UK Youth (is probably the weakest of the UK based Conti teams as well!)

yep. 2003 was fastest ever ITT >40km

They did the maths on eurosport... Millars ITT average speed would have beaten Martins time by 7-8 minutes (it was in early part of race they were working it out)... im presuming millar was on the flat!

Was Millar on the hot sauce then? I can't recall when he said he was using it other than the WOrlds he was stripped of.

If Nico had serious aspirations he'd get away from AG2R asap. Like all french teams they're pretty much useless, run on a shoestring budget and more than happy to just have riders in breakaways for the cameras. I know he's a frenchie but he could do with doing a Chavenal and get into a solid team like OPQ
