Hi Everyone

My wife is nearly 21 weeks with twins and has her first appointment in the Booking clinic in Waterford next Monday. When we had our problem last Saturday the midwife recommended we try and get an earlier appointment. I have been ringing this morning and have failed to get through but i did get an answering machine and found out the name of our consultant. I goggled his name and it turns out he doesn't have a good bedside manner and in general is not a nice person which is the last thing we want as my wifes confidence in the system here is very low. I'm wondering now can i change the consultant? Would we have to deal with him for every appointment? Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

I.m flat out buying things for my little lady too!i.m a bit of and Indie head so i bought lots of purple and reds and denim !she Will wear the clothes i am either not cool enough/not slim enough to wear ! Poor child already has my ears,she.ll hate me when she.s 12!

JG I am so lazy too! I've just started my own business but because I'm not busy yet I just sit in front of the computer "pretending" to do work......:D

I went out and bought some maternity clothes yesterday. But it's so nice being able to wear a pair of jeans again!!! I bought them in next but they were a bit pricey at €38, I bought 2 pairs but I figured that I can pack them away when I am finished with them and maybe wear them again if we decide to have a second baby!

Java I know exactly how you feel - I'm in the (hopefully) final stages of a phd and my concentration is at zero since January! So far today I've looked up buggies (even though I know the one I'm getting), travel cots (even though we won't need one for ages), mummypages, this forum and every other baby related site I could think of. And I was worried that if I'm still not finished by the time the baby arrives I will find it hard to concentrate

Serious kick up the hiney is what I'm in need of!

Mick, sorry to hear about your wife having trouble. I hate to say it but a lot of us here have had some issues with consultants at some stage so far. I know the consultant I have is a complete arse but I've been assured by doctors and other patients that he's one of the best, so that reassures me. I think I'd prefer to know that he's brilliant at his job & has zero patient skills than the other way around... I reckon I'd go and see what he says rather than changing before you meet him. I'd also advise you to have a list of questions written down somewhere to ask him as they tend to herd you in and out before you can blink - you could end up like me coming out with a million unanswered questions... best of luck!

Thanks girls, think I've found the 'Thanks' on my phone so Ill see how that goes still can't see it on computer prob right in frount of me... I'm not used to using computers I'm sure dh can show me when hes home from work!!! I'm so jealous with u all finding out the sex of ur babies, my scans not for a few weeks yet and i can't wait, so excited for u all!!!

I chickened out on finding out the sex! My fiancee didnt want to know and when we were at the scan on Friday I could have asked and didn't. Something in my head was telling me not too!! Also I think it's a boy....it could be the umbilical cord but I dunno.....:D

I'm glad to hear someone else hasn't found out, I was starting to think that I will be the only one not finding out.

I can't get enough of fruity ice pops at the minute, I don't think it's a craving, but OH says it is! Anyway found out at the wkend that a few people on his side of family have had similar craving and all had boys including his mum! It happened to 3 or 4 people. Think it's a boy now!

@Muckger, I wld tend to agree with other posters go and see what consultant is like first. I know how fragile ur wife must be right now, so maybe prepare her a bit for him. At the end of the day, you want the best care possible. I'm sure if ur really not comfortable with a particular doctor u can change. Good luck, let us know how u get on.

Mickger I've seen more doctors over the last number of years than I care to remember and I know that sometimes even when they have the bedside manner of a cold wet fish they can be great doctors... also remember on the internet people are far more likely to complain than to praise. Some people can't stand my consultant and I know he has crap reviews on the internet: I also know my GP reccomends highly reccomends him and he has always been pleasant to me and answered all my questions (don't get me started on some of the midwives though!!).

I'm off to specialist tomorrow... fingers crossed all goes well. I'm so stupidly nervous. Really sick of things going wrong for babs

Big congrats to the girl mammies. My big scan seems so far away!

I'm the same with not really being interested in anything except baby stuff. It actually sort of started a year before got pregnant as I knew we were going to start trying last summer, and it got progressively worse.

There's just so much stuff to read and research that it gets addictive. Imagine how much of an expert we are now compared to women say 20yrs ago who didn't have anywhere to ask questions & didn't have the net (bearing in mind that the net is certainly not a pool of infallible wisdom!)

Sometimes I think about this and wonder how women did it.
I know sometimes googling things can make something worse it you see a bad story, but for me when I was bleeding, I wouldn' of known it was a common occurance were it not for the internet.

Sometimes I would love to be a midwife to help women on this amazing journey, but them poor women are overworked and underpaid and It would make me so broody I'd probably be expecting number 5 now instead of my first.

Had a bit of a break down yesterday over my body changing shape. I knew it would but it didn't stop me crying to my poor OH about how bad I look when trying on clothes for his niece's confirmation.
Maternity clothes are soo unflattering on me!!

Sorry ladies, Can someone fill me in on galfer tabs.
I wasn't taking any but got bloods done last week and I'm the tiniest bit low.
Can I get them in tesco or the likes or chemist?
Do I have to take them with food.

notsobusy- fareplay to you for not asking if thats what you want, it must be hard with others finding out, Its a personal choice i didnt find out on my first but at the time it wasnt as popular as it is now so wasnt too hard to wait. I decided on my 2nd to find out as a lot of the neutral clothes etc... I bought didnt get much use as all i wanted on him was blue/boy clothes. I found it great then on baby no.2 when i had everything bought and ready for him so plan on finding out this time also!!
Kildareash- I had cravings for fruity ice pops on my first and had a boy so maybe your right!!!
cyning- Thanks for that, i'll just have to spend more time posting, like i need an excuse i'm as lazy these days!!

Not sure about buying them in tesco, but you would get then in pretty much all pharmacies. There's an iron supplement with folic acid available too.
Sorry don't know anything about taking them!

Java, I'm taking Galfer tabs for about a week now. GP said to take them with orange juice or vitamin C in some form as it aids iron absorption. Don't take with caffeine as this has the opposite effect. She didn't mention taking them with meals. And now for way too much information - she also told me that if your poo turns black or you have constipation that's all part and parcel & no need to worry

Is anyone going for reusable nappies?

I read a review on them recently, and I'm almost convinced that they are the way to go for us...

Also, what are you planning sleep wise? I had planned on getting a co-sleeper cot, and waiting until she grows out of that before getting anything else, but someone was telling me I would need a travel cot or bassinet or something as well - anyone have any experience of this?

The moses baskets are really cute, but given the fact that my brother was a 13lb baby, and my hubby is 6'7, I have visions of a giant baby who won't fit in it

Kash I'm really not sure what to do re sleeping arrangements. The Co-sleeper cots look so small, like baby would grow out of it in a couple months, then would have to go get a bigger cot.

If you're likely to have a baby on the big side then they would outgrow the moses basket within a month, plus I would get 0-3 in baby clothes, not newborn. I'm not bothering with newborn clothes as most seem to be for 7.5lbers and I'd say my babs will be a 9lber like both my sisters.

Going to the doctor tonight, it's just too long between last apt and my big scan, want to hear baby's heart to be on safe side. Plus my own heart is going 90 since last night, way more than usual & when I'm sitting. Now I know it's very very common for this to happen in pregnancy but I just want to check it as I've had heart murmurs come up on a 24hr trace before and I just want to check it out. So hubby meeting me there & hopefully get to hear the wee one's heart. Can't believe it's 6 weeks since heard it!

Well Im just home from work and had to share this one with you all........

One of my old cranky patients today asked me if I had news for her? I replied, 'no not really' as she is not the type of person u want knowing your business!!

She then proceeded to tell me that she knew I was pregnant and that she has heard it from someone which she was not going to tell me who! She then went on to say that in her day an unmarried mother would have been sent to a convent, or even sent to England to never be allowed back! She then asked if I was catholic and if my parents were very dissappointed!!! WTF!!!

I just sat there with my mouth wide opening and could not even get a word in!!!

Kash I genuinely couldn't think of anything worse than reusable nappies: I'd love to think I'd be able to use them because they are better for environment etc but I just couldn't

I'm getting a moses basket and then babs will be going into cot. I was going to get a co sleeper but it would make space very limited in our room.

Kiwi I would have absolutely lost the plot... I don't know how you kept your cool!!

I didn't know there were still people like that in the world! If you weren't in a professional situation I'll bet there were some choice words you would have had for her

Kash there may be bio degradable nappies you can try. Re the reusable ones there is also the con of the impact of using your washing machine a lot more and you have to use special chemicals to clean them ... I think. Would you combine them with disposables, ie; bring disposables when you're out or when baby being minded by others?

Re-usable nappies....don't think so. Not for me, I hate doing the clothes washing in this house as it is...never mind cleaning poo poo nappies...

Re: sleeping arrangements.
My sister is giving me a Moses basket and a crib type thing. She always had the wooden crib in her sitting room for her little ones and the Moses basket upstairs. Once they got too big for Moses basket they were in a cot.
The crib is wooden and a bit bigger than a Moses basket, it rocks too I think.

But I have a feeling that my baby will be bigger than hers. Her three were 6-7lbs. My daughter was 8lbs 2.5 oz.
Even though I am only 5.4ft, hubby is 6.3ft. So I'm expecting a long baby like daddy.

I reckon we will just play the whole thing by ear!

Kash- I'm using a cradle for the first few months and then into the cot when babys bigger.Don't think i'll use reusable nappies- that would be too much work for me!!:)
Re: baby clothes I agree with Mink 0-3 months is best as newborn clothes only fit some babies ie 7lb or smaller and even then don't last long before they grow out of them.
Kiwi- Cant believe that happened today some people are just mad, i'd say you had to try hard not to say something back!!!

Kash and Tinkerbell - congratulations - all little girls, so exciting!!!!
I said all along that I didn't want to find out the sex - now it's getting closer to scan time I'm getting second thoughts..

Kiwi - what a wagon - don't know how you held your tongue, think I would have flipped :eek:

Kash - I'm borrowing a moses basket - (going to get it re-lined and new mattress) for when babs is small and cot for the nursery.. (that's assuming the house I have yet to find will have a spare room for a nursery)

Re-usable nappies sound like a lot of extra work and washing - think I'll be sticking with disposable.

Kiwi - I didn't realise you'd met my OH's mother!! Jk, she's not just that bad but not far off it. God, what a wagon - how did you manage to not go crazy and then just blame pregnancy hormones

Kash - I'm all for being environmentally friendly but the OH said a big fat no to reusable nappies from day one. I'm inclined to agree on this one though, seems like too much work for me right now...

Mother Care in Belgard Road in Tallaght has a lot of baby clothes on sale (Mainly for boys or girls but really cute

)

Re nappies – my sis was using for 2 weeks reusable and she switched back to regular pampers. She said with 2 months old and 4 years old it is too much effort.
