Future advances in laser eye surgery
Does anyone know much about what possible future advances there will be in this area? The current technology used in laser eye surgery has been around quite a while at this stage. I remember reading about how they are trying to develop incisionless laser eye surgery so no need for a flap to be created and opened on the eye (the bit that freaks me out the most about laser eye correction). Does anyone have any more info on this area as to how far along this technology is?

LASEK creates no flap but it's a more uncomfortable procedure and takes longer to heal. I've always thought it a superior treatment personally.
I've heard a bit about physical manipulation of the cornea rather than ablation but the difficulty with any new procedure would be the length of time you'd have to wait until it 'proved' itself. The process of ablating the cornea with a laser has been around more than twenty years. You'd be waiting a long time before something new came along and proved itself over a long enough period to make you feel comfortable enough to do it. |
