Hi, I have got an exemption form Irish from NUI due to that fact I was born outside Ireland.., but it's not one from the sec and my school say I have to stay in the class. My exemption means that I can fail leaving cert Irish but have to sit it, do I really have to continue to take the class even if I don't need the class or want to take it..?

    Thanks..

Go to Citizen's Information Office or contact the department of education.

If you haven't got a DES exemption, then you're obliged to be following a suitable programme of study in Irish in order to be a recognised senior cycle student for the purposes of school funding. So the school is being reasonable in demanding that you stay in class.

(You are actually not obliged to sit the exam, but you are obliged to follow the course.)

If you don't sit any part of the exam, it will not appear on your cert..

If you go in for the oral Irish and then do not sit the exam, you will get a grade on your statement of results.
Stay out of the oral, stay out of the written exam and nothing will appear on your results.

Just go to the classes and keep your head down. As long as you explain to the teacher he/she will quite possibly be happy enough to let you study your own stuff at the back of the room.
