    Reading this guy http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/motor-oil-101/
he prefers oil that's one grade thinner than recommended.

For the 530i I'm wondering if 0W30 could be used, that has the BMW LL-04 or LL-01 standard?

    e.g. this one http://castroledge.com/oil-range/0w-30

Because of the better properties of 0w30 while the engine is cold, and most of my trips are short ~ 5 miles, the engine barely gets up to temperature... and since 90% of the engine wear happens on startup...

0w30 isnt "thinner" than 5w30, its got additives that promote better flow at low temp. It wont do any harm, but likely wont really make any difference over a premium brand 5w30 either as the additives are for -20 like temps.

So it won't leak as someone I talked to yesterday says ? (Oranmore specialists) Or wear out the seals, like 'the top BMW mechanic in Galway' says?

good to know... I think I'll go for it.
