Hey all, cheers for reading this.

I'm wondering how easy this (little) job would be to do.

I bought a plug in (clip on) light there today but I'd like to put a one way switch on it so I could leave it plugged in and use say a light switch just to switch it on an off when I needed it.

So I bought a standard light switch and some cable.
What exactly do I need to do?

    *What I've done so far..............

Firstly I've chopped the plug off from the plug in light.
Which leaves me with a cable coming from the light terminating in Brown/Blue wires.

My switch has a port for common and underneath it 2 free ports (I'm guessing one of them is for 2 way)

What should I do next? .. I'm a bit unsure

Please note: I don't want to wire this up directly to the mains. I'd like to reattach the plug and still use it as a plug in light (but with a switch)

    All advice appreciated :)

Options that may make your life easier are:

    1. buy a timer switch and let that do the work for you
    2. buy a remote control switch that you can just use the remote to turn on/off the light
    3. buy a plug socket with switches like: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1izinNegm9g/TiLM-cXuhsI/AAAAAAAABAw/xebZgEBuFsY/s1600/socket-jpg.jpg

    Thanks for the replies.
The inline switch looks like the easier option.

Is there no way to use the switch I've bought?

Post a pic ( or a link ) to what you have. The inline switch is the easiest option. 5 minute job. Advise to keep it near to the lamp as opposed to the plug, particularly if it is likely to be used as a bedside lamp, purely for convenience.

Are you fixing your switch to a wall or similar?

  • Registered Users Posts: 88 ✭✭MelbourneDub

yes, as in this pic, I have them terminated to a box

    Ok

    Ensure it's not plugged in!

Make sure your cable entries are free of any sharp edges.

You also should have some form of strain relief so that if either cable can be pulled it won't pull the wires from the terminals.

On your mains lead you connect the live (brown) to the one marked com.

Connect the brown from the light to one of the other two terminals (if you pick the wrong one the switch will just operate upside down)

Connect the two blue wires together in an appropriate size connector.

Make sure all connections are tight.

Fit switch onto box before trying.
