Oh and Shani Stallard and Fiona Doyle go in the 200m breast stroke

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,154 ✭✭✭✭Dodge

Shani and Fiona both qualified for the semi finals, but both were some way off the Qualifying time. Another chance tonight

And bad news in the relay with Ireland dropping another spot in the rankings due to Slovenia's good swim.

By my reckoning, Ireland needs to swim faster than 8:06 and finish ahead of Slovenia, Ukraine and Austria. And all that without Gráinne Murphy.

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,154 ✭✭✭✭Dodge

Yeah, 5th in the heats (of the non qualified nations).

A full 5 seconds behind Austria

The only saving grace is that maybe they watched the first heat and knew they had a huge cushion to make final

    The splits
    McMahon - 2:02.21
    Nocher - 2:01.38
    Murphy - 2:06.63
    Carson - 2:03.08

As a comprison these are all listed with the following 'Qualifying times' for the 200m Free individual

    McMahon -2:00.61
    Nocher - 2:00.49
    Murphy - 2:03.64
    Carson - 2:02.44

So we'll need PBs from pretty much all of them to get that 2:06 time

They need to swim 8:06.67mins and finish ahead of Austria at the very least to have a chance of qualification. Without Grainne, I don't see them getting the National Record but you never know. At least they still have a chance.

Surely they'll have to finish ahead of Ukraine and Slovenia too? Both are ahead of Ireland in the current rankings.

Ideally they do, but as my post suggests, the very least they need to do is beat Austria and finish inside 8:06.67mins. At the moment Austria are 4th in the rankings of unqualified teams. Taking into times from last season that is the minimum time they need, anything less and they won't be in top 4 of unqualified nations. But if they dip inside that time they still need no more than 3 unqualified teams to finish ahead of them. Even that might not be enough though.

any links to the rankings lads?

Compare times at world championships last year and this years times. I think that's fairly accurate way of doing it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,154 ✭✭✭✭Dodge

yeah, was just wondering if there were any other international meets that I didn't see.

    Thanks

based on best times, here's the 6

    Spain - 08:00.7 - 1
    Italy - 08:02.7 - 2
    Slovenia - 08:06.1 - 3
    Ukraine - 08:06.4 - 4
    Austria - 08:06.7 - 5
    Ireland - 08:07.7 - 6
    --

So as Pheredykes said we'd need to beat Austria and the Ukraine and swim lower than 08:06.41

The girls are in lane 1 tonight with Italy and Spain in lanes 1 and 2.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,076 Mod ✭✭✭✭Dan man

Good work Pherekydes, so they need to swim under 8:06.10mins and finish ahead of Ukraine, Austria and Slovenia to stand any chance of going to London.

You're forgetting the Netherlands are third of those not yet qualified (8:03.89mins). So they need to swim under 8:06.10mins at least.

Ineteresting to see that in the womens 800m free, the gold was won in a time 7 seconds slower than Grainne Murphy swam in 2010 to win bronze.

    6th in 8:09.xx

    Unlikely to qualify now...

That's a pity, my understanding of the situation is that this meet was their last chance for qualification.

I think that's the European short course championships you're comparing it with, Murphy was 4th in the Europeans in 2010 over long course. However, the winning time at these championships is slower than her time from 2010. No Lotte Friis, no Pellegrini, no Addlington here however (Adlington didn't compete in 2010 Euros either).

I will be in Dublin either tomorrow or Saturday.
On recent visits I have been unable to find any Irish Olympic Merchandising.
I read in a magazine that Carrolls (the souvenir shop people) had Olympic souvenirs but I visited two stores and did not see any.
It would seem the OCI is missing out on a fund raising opportunity.

As has been pointed out, the team might well end up in excess of 60 people.
Inevitably there will be people narrowly missing out. And people successfully getting a last minute qualifying standard.
But I think the rules from the past few years are very different from the 1970s and 1980s.
I recall Pat Hickey saying some years ago that there would be no "Olympic tourists" and that people would earn their place.
These days qualification is the name of the game....not just nomination.
While this could be the biggest team ever to represent Ireland, perhaps more importantly it will be the best qualified team to ever represent the country.

I think it is already the largest number of Irish athletes who have qualified as of right for the Olympics (only Derek Burnett in shooting has received an invitation slot so far).
In terms of representation, the record is 78 from Sydney, this will not be beaten this time but as you say, it is a much stronger squad we have assembled this time when compared to that Games.

    [Quote=Dan man;

Correct, a men's water polo team in both 1924 and 1928 in fact.[/Quote]
OK, water polo too, but it's still a gap of 60 years plus.
All I know about water polo was gleaned from Jack Lemmon in the film "Some Like It Hot." Recounting his water polo exploits, he said four horses had drowned under him.
Did Noel Purcell of Dublin play water polo for Britain in 1920, and for Ireland in 1924?

    :D made me laugh!

Yes Noel Purcell won gold with the British team in 1920 before representing Ireland 4 years later. Ireland first competed at the Olympics in 1924. He was selected in 1928 also but didn't go in te end up due to work commitments.

Very decent score and promising performance with the Olympics on the horizon. The experience of another final, in particular a major championships final will surely be of benefit to him for the future.

Check out the guy in 18th position on that Gymnastics list.Rohan Sebastian. His second score is up there with the best of the competition. Anyone got the word on him?

The first score is difficulty, the second execution. He executed a relatively easy routine very well.

Other than that I know nothing about gymnastics. I didn't even know we had more than Behan competing. :o
