One of the very first batch of W123's in Ireland !

Oh, that is a nice Mercedes - Looks very original from that picture. I guess it's an early one judging by the headrests and single door mirror. What year is it?

I like the fact it's got the old reg plate too as opposed to the pressed steel which seems more common on the old 'luxury' cars.

Is it badged a 200? Its very similar to one I enquired about last year, except it was a 230 with the old W115 carb 2.3 and no p/steering!

The very last W115 that was registyered in ireland is the same colour and also have a reg number ending in .......I'm not sure if its "GZA" but its definitely "_ZA" and belongs to MDL.

The W123 models surpassed their predecessor, the W114/W115 "stroke-8" models... (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/W123)

The W115, (alongside the W114) was the model which preceeded the W123.

The W114/115 ran from '68 to '76 and were also called /8 , stroke 8 or strichtacht models. The W114s were 6cyl, the W115 were 4cyl, and i know Andreas is gonna let us know abouty the 5pot diesels (;)) so they're in there too somewhere.

These were replaced in '76 by the W123, which ran until '85 or so, until they in turn were replaced by the W124.

So, it might be fair to say that the E class as we know it today, began with, or certainly had its origins in the late 60s. Some may argue that the W123 was the forerunner of the modern E class, but i'd go back a generation.

The 5pot Diesels were W115s as well as the 4pots, but since it was not a 4pot but also not a 6pot, the chassis code of the 5pot Diesels always began with 115114:D

IMO you could go back 2 generations to the fintails (W110/W111)

Sorry it'd take too long to browse the whole thread (which i haven't read in a while anyway), but does anyone know if there's a place i can find out if specific old cars have been scrapped or not? A way of say, giving them a reg# and them being able to say if it's still on the road or when it was scrapped?

Hmm maybe this should be a new thread...

Yep,cartell.ie or motorcheck.ie are the only two that i know of,though its not free.
Maybe if you went into your local motortax office and asked nicely they might(stressing the might;))help you.

Cartell isn't really that accurate TBH. I paid the €15 for a laugh and looked up our old Escort, and it said it's roadworthiness is 'Current' even though we scrapped it in 1993.

I bet thats because the tax book is still floating around somewhere, they have to list the car as current then, but it will be listed as untaxed since whenever.I agree with what you say though, its a bit of a flaw in the system....

Pity the government setup a website similar to that of the DVLA's website. So much information for free.

Thats a great pic of the Mexico.
Something about the nose up, squatted rear end, mud flaps bent back, tells you he's on the loud pedal.:)

What a cool looking car. It looks like it could sting you.
    Thanks W.A.
