The tax on a €1200 ish 740i is looney relative to the car's value, €1600+/annum, most folks willing to spend €1600+ on tax would need to earn €3000 to pay that €1600. All well and good saying the car is priced accordingly.

    I'm not saying it isn't looney. :)

Yeah that is fair enough. But if I know that each and every time I go out to my car to go for a spin in it that I'm really going to enjoy it well then I think I'd attempt to suffer the tax bill. The system is a joke though.

I also think that were I going to go to buy a 740i or whatever I'd try and build the tax into the overall price of the car and go from there. Wouldn't seem as bad to me doing it that way.

I dunno I guess I'll have to get a big engined car and see what paying the tax is like in real life, I imagine it's easier said than done tbh. :(

    Peugeot 406 1 Year NCT €1000.
I'm sure somebody said that the diesel is a much better engine than this 1.8 petrol.

Ha, was just about to update on my banger.

My brother has tried his best to kill it and it lives on as well as ever.

He did his best to empty the tank. 560 miles done and over 1/3 left on board.

Thats great going and a first vote for Puggernomics :)

edit2: doh, the above add is a petrol. The 2.0 diesel is the one to go for.

Decent lash of miles but if the gearbox isn't showing the audible signs of them there should be loads left in this yoke...

NCTd 'till January 2013 and looks clean inside and out, 'tis in Mayo.

Another one, this time in Galway, cheaper, with less miles and tested until Aug 2013, asking €700.

Well it does actually because I'd have no problem cutting a few pints out of my week in order to have a car I have been dreaming about for years. I don't need alchohol in order to have a laugh but each to their own. :)

The tax rate might be crazy in this country and you're right it is money you won't enjoy, but as a huge car fan it's money that enables you to enjoy a really special car, that is a 740 or Alfa V6.

I think the point cadilac is making is that go ahead and make cutbacks for the car you want, but to do it merely to tax the car you want is joyless.

And there in lies the clear line between a true petrol head and someone with an interest in cars.

I'd happily drop money on a nice car, if it means drinking less, grand. Sure that's only fun for about three hours 'till you're locked and you get s hang over, a years tax in a big power car is a year of fun.
    No trade off for me.

How much would you spend on drink per year Cian?

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,721 ✭✭✭✭CianRyan

I'd say around €400 a year, then add taxi fair and paying into clubs it'd easily top €1000.

If I could afford it, I'd happily pay twice that for the pleasure of driving the likes of a 350Z or similar.

(I know tax is higher than €2k on a 350Z but you get the idea. :) )

..... and you'd class yourself as a real petrol head rather than someone with just an interest in cars? Plenty of 350z are less than the 2 thou to tax too btw.

3.5l on the old tax system is the highest bracket, +€2k, no?
To be honest I don't know exactly how much my own costs for the year but that's just it, it could be €300 or it could be €500, it doesn't really matter to me.

I'm not saying I'm more of an enthusiast and someone else isn't, I just feel that if one really want something, they'll find a way to get it and if someone else thinks it's a sad way to be then they clearly don't feel as strongly as the former. :)

Would you not agree with the last paragraphy at least?

Guys , yee could start a whole thread on this topic of high tax bands. It'd be a good idea. Now as for this discussion here...it needs more bangers:D

What I don't agree with is your summary of the difference between a real petrol head and someone with just an interest in cars as you put it. Old tax system no car is over 2k to tax.

I think the e46 touring look sooooo much better than the e36 touring. I'd have to get the e46 if I was getting one. If it was the coupe or saloon, I wouldn't mind all that much as they're both nice cars.

http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/3382561 something telling me its hiding a big problem, but sure for that money it couldnt be hard to get her on the road for a few hundred.

and then a 04 diesel mondeo with the nurburgering sticker and german plates for 1800 http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/3382996

I like this, could be a great project to start on or else just sell for spares but my feeling is the knock on the front is the problem if so, twould be a good buy http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/3347386

    €1100 ish?

Edit: Oops, though it was the 2.8 vr.

    900 ish.

    Nah, 930ish, I pay 1005 on a 2.5.

    Nah, 930ish, I pay 1005 on a 2.5.

I or anyone here could buy a car for that, as we all know.
The other side of the coin is that tax has to be paid anyway and its €400 more than a 2l tax bill. That broken over quarterly payments equates to a full tank of fuel (extra).

That 323 was for sale for AAAAAGES by a dealer in Dublin. Probably due to price and being undesireable, but if this is a private seller I'd say he hasn't had it long. Just some info for anyone interested. I liked the previous version (1.8). There was someone else on here who had the 2.0 but had a pain of a time replacing the combined cat/manifold for NCT.

V70 looks good, I like it.

Prefer those coupes in the metallic orange colour, or navy or black. Silver isn't doing it at all for me

    (picky picky I know :D;):p )

Even getting something as simple as a brake caliper is a nightmare.
Still though, great yoke given how light they are,

Yeah, the 1.8 I drove was a fun car - the uprated suspension and extra power really transformed if from the boggo version. I think the fogs/spots on the 2.0 GT are a bit OTT though (IMHO)
