I visited a GP today who refused to renew my prescription for Yasminelle, the combined pill that I have been on for 2 years because of the fact that I had a couple of migraine type headaches a few years ago while I was on a different pill. He scared the living daylights out of me, told me that I could end up having a stroke and be paralysed and instead prescribed a progesterone pill even though I've had real problems with side effects from these in the past.

I checked the Yasminelle website and there is nothing on there to indicate that somebody who has had migraines shouldn't take it. I am not looking for medical advice on this. From previous experience, by going on to this other pill, I already know I am setting myself up for a nightmare and I don't want to do it needlessly. Yasminelle is the only pill I have ever been on that has never caused me a single problem and I'm very reluctant to come off it.

I suffer from migraines but they're not too bad, in that I don't get migraine with aura (visual hallucinations); I get photophobia and nausea but that's all. Painkillers and sleeping in a dark room until it all goes away is the only thing that helps!

I was told by my GP that being on the pill is a bad idea for someone who gets worse migraines than myself. I've been on Yasmin for about 2 years now and as long as my migraines don't get worse and my BP stays low I should be fine. Smoking is a big no-no as well. There's also no family history of vascular problems like stroke or clots so my GP is happy to keep prescribing as long as I get BP checks every year. She'd be checking my BP every 6 months if it was high or my family history worried her.

Basically, some GPs seem to be stricter about pill prescriptions than others. If you history or BP is worrying your GP then maybe that's why s/he is being cautious. I could also understand him/her not wanting to prescribe any more if you'd never suffered migraine before taking the pill, but I'm not sure from your post that that's the case?

Maybe have another chat with your GP and find out for definite why your prescription isn't being renewed.

I had a lot of visual disturbance when I had these migraines and I think that that's what worried the gp who refused my prescription yesterday. That said, I am a healthy weight, have normal blood pressure and exercise regularly so I wouldn't have thought I'd be high risk for a stroke. I went to a different gp this morning to get my normal yasminelle prescription but also made an appointment to see a specialist just to make doubly sure that it's safe to be on it. Thanks for everybody's advice on this.

It's great to hear your GP's taking it seriously Depending on your age you may not be at risk for stroke, but there's no harm in being safe! Vascular problems aren't to be messed around with Hope it all works out for you!

I've started on Yasminelle and want to delay my period by a few days. So do I just continue on to a new pack after the 21 days, without the 7 day break? Then do I need to finish the next pack completely or can I stop after say maybe 4 days? Sorry if this is a stupid question, I've never been on the pill before and I'm a bit clueless :rolleyes:

Hi, can anybody here recommend a GP/Specialist who has a good knowledge and understanding of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome in the Longford/Leitrim/Roscommon area? At times some doctors don't have alot of information on this condition! Cheers

Hey ladies, I've been on about four different types of pill in the last ten years and I'm fed up with it!
Came to a head recently when I met up with a friend who is eight months preggo and realised I was having the same symptoms as her, fatigue, depression, breast enlargement, boobs sore, huge weight gain on stomach, nausea sex drive non exisistant etc etc
Now I'm definitely not pregnant and I'm realising now it's the pill that's doing this, I was thinking of just using condoms and coming off the pill altogether.
I'm newly married but we don't want kids at the moment and my husband has no issues with condoms.
So, is there any ladies out there that use condoms and nothing else? How is it fairing out?

I found that when I came off the pill to conceive last year that I felt amazing so I pretty much decided then there would be no more hormonal contraception for me.

This left two options, barrier or copper coil. I still haven't made a decision about the coil so we're using condoms and are having no problems.

HOWEVER: it wouldn't be the end of the world if an accident were to happen for us.

Thanks for the insight! The more I think about it- plus I'm sitting here absolutely shattered after ten mins of running errands- that coming off the pill would be good for me!
Discussed it with the husband and he's happy enough with the plan and we always used condoms with the pill so no major change for him.
Wouldn't be ideal if I got pregnant but we'd manage. Well i think I'll give it a go and see how it works out for a few months.
