Of course the Swastika was just a Roman symbol for Life Bringing River that Hitler adopted!

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,980 ✭✭✭✭Cuddlesworth

Its not on Google Earth, the photos stop about 30 yards away from it. And it doesnt really look like a swastica anymore.

Never heard of a swastika-shaped house in Templeogue, but there was a laundrette in Ballsbridge called the Swastika cleaners. I remember they had the swastika in red on wither side of the name.

I think it's more or less where the modern Iona Technologies building is now
-OR- "a stone's throw from the US Embassy" ;) - boom boom!

Or is this all just ARSE?! The swastika was pinched (and reversed) by Hitler from the (post-Indo/Aryan) Indians! You'll see it all over Asia in buildings and temples which date back THOUSANDS OF YEARS!!!

Yes, Hitler borrowed the symbol from the ancient Indians, but it was not reversed by him. There are actually two symbols, the one he used, and one that was its opposite (reverse). The one he used was destructive, whereas, the reverse was constructive.

    I think it is - try 53deg 18min 01.24secs N - 6deg 17mins 59.99 secs W. It is right on the edge of the blurred bit....;)

I am old enough to remember my parents pointing it out to me - when we were heading for the 'country' - it was (in the 50's) the last house before Templeogue village - which was in the country according to Dubs of the time!!

It doesn't much look like a swastika now, I never heard that aspect of it, but it was built in the 30's and my parents said that German spies were caught there... probably a mis-read of the fact it was a German who owned it....I pass it regularly in the bus and always remember the 'history'

Funny coincidence, got on to this thread because of the Register item, my daughter lives in Maastrich and her partner used to live in Maasmechlen, the place where the swastika pool was 'discovered' Small sort of world....

BTW is the blurry bit because Google isn't up to date or they cannot get access to the Ordnance Survey's latest images?

    Bye, Barry

Ordnance Survey? I'm pretty sure that the Ordnance Survey doesn't have it's own satellite!

but they do have a number of planes used for taking low level aerial photography- including a hi-rez digital camera and a LIDAR (laser imaging) camera.

Speaking of aerially visual National Socialist ephemera, remember the Nazi forest?

Different coloured trees were planted during the Third Reich in a forest to make out a swastika. It was only discovered a number of years after the war.

The House is on Googlearth though its a little blurred. Follow the road between Terenure village going to Templeogue Village. Just past Bushy Park on the Terneure College side of the road cross Fortfield road and along that line of houses just before the Templeogue road crossroads you'll see the blurred white house in the middle. It is not shaped like a swastika but it did have beacons on the roof during the war in the shape of the nazi logo. The nazi sympathisers who owned the house originally sold the house after the war and the beacons were removed. The current occupants are not fascists.

I would love to see estate agents put that phrase in one of their floral descriptions of house.

Hard to believe but it's true, the present owners are Jewish.

Neither does Google:rolleyes: - they buy/borrow/steal? the images from the owners/originators. Most (European) Ordnance Surveys or their equivalent now realise the value of what they own and don't allow the likes of Google E to just grab the images for nuttin. Even the CoCos have to pay for the license and even then they are not authorised to offer anything very detailed for access on their websites and afaik licensees are obliges to block copy of the images.

    Bye, Barry

The house is not in a shape of a swastica and never was. Although it was once owned my a nazi sympatiser. When he lived there he did in fact get the swastica sign tiled into the floor of his entrance hallway.

Used to pass that place on my daily commute home (very slow so plenty of time to look around)

Always thought it was a very unusual house for the area.

Just goes to show, fascinating history in Dublin when you delve into it.

Off topic, but for years i thought the headless statue in fairview park was the result of mindless vandals.

It turns out the statue was decapitated by political activists because the guy (Seán Russell) was heavily involved with the nazis during ww2.

after reading that he was hardly heavily involved

after reading that he was hardly heavily involved

He went over to berlin during the war, was welcomed by the nazi's and did a few months training with them. Then they sent out a U-boat just so he could go back to Ireland and be an agent for them over here.

In my books that's "heavy involvement", as opposed to just sitting in your nice little house in Ireland and listening to german radio.

German radio is not all it's cracked u to be. Was over there a couple of weeks ago and they didn't play one song by David Hasselhoff when we were in the car.

Younger bordsies will not remember but their was a Dublin laundry company based out in Ballsbridge Dublin called Swastika Laundry and they had the Nazi Swastika symbol as their logo on the red vans ( tis true  ) . The symbol originates from roman times and adopted by the Nazis

While he was probably a bit naive to go there and receive training, at the end of the day the guy is a national hero. I'd love to meet the guy who cut the head of that statue, I'd break every bone in his stupid body.

What exactly makes him a national hero? I cut the head off the statue
