Hi all,

I work in structural design and want to sit the Project Management Institute PMP exam this year.

There are loads of training providers around with significantly varying costs. Most courses seem to be 4 days, but there are some 2 day courses on offer. It's unlikely that my employer will sponsor my undertaking the course and PMP exam, so I have to find the best value that suits my ability.

I am unsure about the 2 day course because project management isn't the primary focus of my employment. I feel that an architect or site engineer may have more project management experience than a typical design engineer.

Any comments or suggestions welcome.

What project management experience do you have? Have you completed any PM courses to date?

Ten years ago i did a pm module in college. No other formal training since.

In my current employment, i manage small construction projects.

Have you done any pmi exam preparation course?

You generally need a minimum of 35 hours of formal education to sit these exams hence why you see many 3/4 day PMI courses and pre exam courses.

Yes, I did a level 9 post grad diploma in PM a few years ago. I honestly think you would be wasting your money doing a 2 or 3 day course prior to sitting the PMP exam. Try to get your hands on the most recent PMP exam preparation book by Rita Mulcahy. It will give you an idea of what is required.

I have recently started a PM course and need to buy the Rita Mulcahy exam prep book. Anyone have one to sell or know where to buy a second hand book?
They cost about €90 new so a second hand one would be ideal.

The change them every year so an old text book may not be of any use to you

i noticed that they change them but the change came in July 2011 so a book from then would be ok

For anyone interested.

I choose a 4 day course. Definitely the right choice for me as there is a lot of material to cover. I recommend reading as much of the Rita Mulcahy book before you attend any course, so you can get your head around PMI-isms.

Where would people recommend doing the 4 day course? How about the IEI 4 day course? I am in a Process Manager position in the manufacturing industry and would like some formal training in project management. Any advice much appreciated as there is so many places offering courses it seems.

Doing the pmp course at he moment. It's 6 days long and a two day boot camp. All done through work.

Have to say you could read the book and do the exam questions but you would IMO be going the long way round. You also need a cert to say you have been taught by an approved pmp trainer.

Doing our course with aspiracon and so far I am impressed the content and the delivery is at good pace with a lot of interactive exercises.

Be careful if you buy a second hand book as the books get rev'd every year or so and are due for another rev Q1 next year afaik
