Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

College Green car ban

    Didn't see another thread about this, in the paper today

    "The proposal, presented at the Hidden Rooms design conference in City Hall, would see the area in front of the Bank of Ireland blocked off to traffic and a two-way system introduced in front of Trinity College. Northbound traffic travelling down Dame Street towards College Green would be diverted before reaching the bank and would continue to Westmoreland Street on the Trinity College side of the road. There would be no change to southbound traffic flows, but traffic would be reduced to one lane to facilitate the two-way system.

    Will be interesting to see how this affects traffic in the area and also to see the retailers response to the proposals.

    That could be hairy alright, also wonder about cyclists. Article doesn't mention anything about provision for cycle lanes.

    Doesnt need to as cyclists just make up their own rules anyway :D

    They are probably doing this because no one obeys the current morning/evening traffic restriction on College Green.

    I'd be concerned about bus and cycling movements through the green. It should be a permanent car ban. I don't know why the Gardaí weren't harsher on the people driving through the green. A large fine should sort it out.

    That plan seems plain daft - how the hell could the LUAS cope efficiently with the extra traffic crossovers - also, with two way traffic on the Trinity side, four lanes (two traffic + two Luas) would still be required - so wider footpaths??? Look, it's simple - just ban northbound traffic and widen the path - an extra lane width for pedestrians, 2 lanes for trams and possibly some northbound bus services, and one traffic lane southbound. One way traffic should suffice for any motorist who has business in the area - general through traffic and cyclists should be actively discouraged from what is essentially a major pedestrian thoroughfare.

    This is inconsistent with the fact that this is not the case.

    It's got to be the second best policed stretch of road after Leinster House.

    Are you kidding me? Every time I'm passing by there (on foot, in a bus/taxi whatever) there's always a guard at any entry to the bus-gate.

    (You wouldn't happen to be a cyclist by any chance?)

    Yes, there is often a Garda or two there, but often there are many people wanting to abuse the bus gate.

    The gardai musnt be doing much to penalize people who drive through bus gate because its an almost constant occurance. There needs to be a hefty fine, not just a telling off.

    Possibly some bus services???:eek:
    Sher Dublin could easily manage with northbound services at Christchurch and Westland row, the mile plus gap won't make any difference....
