Want to try making a moss carpet but does anyone know if the water gets very dirty from uneaten food trapped in the moss?
I presume the fish can't get to the food especially now that I'm only keeping fancy goldfish.

Mosses typically need warm water, while your fancy goldfish need cold.....

A good way to keep mosses clean are to have some shrimp in the tank, as they can and will get into every nook and cranny to clean.

I was interested in java moss and from researching they seem to do well in cold water but I can't find much on uneaten food and feces settling on the moss.
If I increase the temperature I presume the goldfish will be ok but will the goldfish eat the shrimps they look very small?

I currently only have 2 telecopics and 1 black moor no substrate but have some moss balls on order from ebay.

From what i read, the java moss does well between 18 to 30c. Mind you, its not black and white. It's not going to be great at 18 and crap at 17.
More likely, the sweet spot for thriving is in the mid 20's and just tolerating is around the lower and upper extremities of the 18-30c range.

Fancy goldfish will not do well in warmer water (cold water fish), and shrimp will only really do well in warm water.

You can try the moss in the cold water your goldfish need, but i doubt it'll work.

Goldfish tend to eat any plants put in with them too so I wouldn't recommend trying to plant cold-water tanks...
