 That sounds painful but emmm congrats on the new toenail I guess :D

Girls I’m sorry! Sometimes I forget this is a training log. For example, out of the last 5 days, I have run 4 times. You’d never know this because the last running entry is about a zillion pages back in my history. It appears that certain people think that my log is actually a chatroom for men suffering from mid-life crises who wish to regain their youth by e.g. trying to be funny. :D

Now I do take responsibility for the grossness of the toenail issue but nonetheless it is referable to my training and indicates my hardcoreness ! Haha. (I do find myself a little enlightened as to why people frequently seem to question my ladylikeness and etiquette however…):o

Anyhoo – to update the log!!

    Wednesday 16th February
    - Rest

    Thursday 17th February
    - 5.42 miles – Av Moving Pace 9.24
Headed out straight from work and did a handy loop around Donnybrook/Ranelagh – nice and flat. My right ankle was at me – not sore but uncomfortable and it was really bugging me that I was going to start getting niggles and complaints EVERYWHERE. I was trying to understand what it might be and it dawned on me that I may have had my laces tied too tight. So when I stopped at a red light after about 2 miles, I loosened the laces and the relief was pretty much immediate. I’ve done all my runs this week in my new runners so they’re probably just a bit too stiff still. I also realised that I haven’t enjoyed the last few runs because I’ve been aware of my pace and keep trying to go faster than I’m probably able for these days( with the extra mileage in the legs). So I decided that covering the distance was going to be more important for the next 8weeks and to forget about the pace. I don’t have a goal time so I’m not going to kill myself trying and ruin my enjoyment of running while I’m at it. The pace was grand in the end but it was a pretty flat route.

So I’m out for 8 miles tonight and I think I’ll wear my old runners? Good idear / bad idear?

Plus I’m not going to worry about pace for the next few weeks at all. I’ll probably end up slowing right down but I think I need to get the distances covered with putting the pressure on my brain and wanting to stop the whole time.

Sunday’s 18 miler will be slow. Capital S! Hope it all goes according to plan...:)

    Friday 18th February
    - 8.23miles - Av. Moving Pace 9.30

LSR #1 of the weekend - Done! :) Did this is my new runners with looser laces instead of trying to cut the circulation off from my feet and it wonderful! No niggles or pains or overactive imagination telling me I was going to need amputation surgery because of pains or otherwise. The weather was pretty horrendous (wet and wild!) so the new runners are nicely christened! My mate from work asked me when we were running into the rain "Is this what Waterford was like?". My reply was "Kinda, but with wind and the rain was horizontal!" I think she finally understood my pain! All topped off with with delicious homemade pizzas and beer. :D She was so delighted to have her LSR done and dusted for the weekend that I kind of forgot I hadn't even got half of mine done!

I really enjoyed this run - best one in a couple of weeks. Thank god, I was starting to worry! Though I hope I haven't taken too much out of the legs in advance of tomorrow. Going back to the old runners for the long one so I hope all the joints and muscles behave.

    Saturday 19th February
    - Rest
Ideally I'd like to sit on the couch for the day to recharge and prepare but that ain't going to happen. I'm on babysitting duty for the day and had promised a trip to the zoo if it wasn't raining. Ugh. I would never wish for rain but a few drops around the time I collect the sproggies might let me get away with the cinema instead  ...that is so not gonna happen is it...:pac:

It didn't rain...in fact it was a beautiful day. Which I spent traipsing around the zoo with 3 excitable children in footwear not suited to such traipsing. I'm tired. And my shin is a little sore...I seriously hope it's all in my head... Plenty of pizza and treats for the kids me kind of makes up for it. I think I'm the favourite babysitter :D Hopefully tomorrow is a success. (I won't lie, I'm a bit worried!:()

You've nothing to worry about, we'll keep you so irritated that you won't notice the mileage, I may even bring a spatula to crack you across the a5s with should you try to bail at 16 :D

    Sunday 20th February
    - 18.61miles - Av Pace 9.52
Big milestone for me today. Absolutely wrecked now but delighted with the run. Met RK and hollypink at 9 for a 6mile loop. It was a very comfortable start. I had intended on taking it slow and steady to get me through the distance and I was not budging from that plan. Poor hollypink was the victim of RK’s not so accurate navigationing skills and her planned LSR of 6 miles swiftly became 7.5! I hope that won’t turn her off joining us again though. That also meant we were late back to pick up the 10o clock crew. Oops. Good thing we’re such good company though, I don’t think they would have waited for any ole pair of cheeky wagons! Took a gel and some water at that point and was feeling pretty good. We trotted off again with mrslow, meno, chinguetti and the Wexican. It all went well until 11.45 miles (exactly – I checked!) when I suffered my second glycogen depletion experience (the first being Waterford) and had a brief miniature breakdown. Kind of lost my breath and teared up like a big wimp. I can’t explain what it was or where it came from – physically I was feeling grand. Poor Meno and mrslow got the brunt of it but coped surprisingly well. Normally when I cry in front of boys, they run away.. Cheers lads! A few pikied mouthfuls of lucozade and we headed off again. Just ran away in my own little world and felt fine again – there was a bubble of joyous conversation and craic going on behind me which I listened to (providing only some very limited yet very entertaining input when the opportunities arose! :pac:). I was pretty thirsty for the last few miles so I’m going to have to look into a belt or a backpack to fix that. Took another gel at 15.2miles which gave me a good boost to get to the end. The legs were pretty tired for the last 2miles but only as expected. At that stage there was a disconnect between the brain and the legs and they were just going... Just trying to get the rest of my body home. The lads let me have a flat run home for which I was very gratefull! So I went over the planned 18. And it was 2 miles longer than I’ve ever run before. Happy days. Followed by a freezing cold shower and an amazing (enormous!) feed. Got home around 4 and passed out on the couch. Right now I am exhausted and expect I’ll sleep like a log from about 8o clock until Thursday! :D

40.41 miles for the week – that’s huge for me and I can definitely feel it. (In that weird sadistic good way though!) Looking forward to a step back week this week ahead of the big 20miler the week after. Yikes.

Fair play to you for keeping going, even after your little moment! You did great today, and you'll be fine for the 20 miler in a couple of weeks time :)

The "wow" replies are a bit overused now (and need to keep some for the big 20 miler en route)

    So...amazing!
Inspirational stuff Ms Clara..you are burning the road beneath you now (and I note taking others along with you!). Well done and delighted it all went so well for you.

claralara good going on the 18.61miles, I've been out of touch with your log as of late so I must have a read back to figure out what the story is with the mention of needles

I'm not gonna make a smart, 'mid-life-crisis' comment about the fact that you cried in front of mrslow and meno......But, rather, I'm going to focus on the distance you completed!! Well done you!! :)

As an aside, on my way to the mountain race in Wicklow this morning I saw a sign that read ''Clara Lara Fun Park''......With advertising like that I'm astounded you didn't get any Valentine cards!

When i turned around and saw you stopped, i thought it was the shin problem again but have to say you did great to get going again and sprint again at the finish. Willpower won't be a problem for you, you just have to stop doubting yourself as you've done every challenge on the training run thus far.

You need to drink a bit more on your runs and before from the sounds of it, even if it is just one sup of water/istonic drink every mile or so.

You are putting too much strain on yourself if you don't fuel your body doing long runs with liquid, gels and food. By food i mean maybe some jellies or a small bar of anything that you can easily digest.

I thought the hand signals were very impressive though and quite funny. i'm sure i saw Mrs low blush there at one stage:D

Well done Claralara. Big achievement. There's feic all difference between 18.61 miles and 20 miles (7% to be exact), so sounds like you're doing fab.
I often get emotional during my runs too (mostly during races though). Shhh... Don't tell anyone, or my hardy image will be ruined..:)

Cheers Teamie! :D Thank god it wasn’t the shins (although that may have provided some justification…) I hear you about the need for proper fueling and I take your advice on board. I’m pretty good for the pre-hydrating and eating but terrible for considering the en route needs. I’m learning valuable lessons by the minute these days! I think I’ll need a picnic in a backpack for my 20 miler… I’ll practice this weekend (even though it’s a shorter run) and bring some jellies and fluids with me or hide them in advance.

And I know I have to stop doubting myself. I’m definitely getting visits from this phantom niggle monster – it’s messing with my head. I was really looking forward to the 18 miles on Saturday but I couldn’t shake the fear that it could very easily go all wrong. Delighted to get through it in one (physical) piece. The shin was a little tender after it and a bit yesterday but it seems to be good again today.

I’m glad I could provide some entertainment. I deserve a medal if that aule one blushed; I was starting to think he had no shame!

7%...you make it sound so easy. The only time I’ve been happy with less than 10% was when I got 9% in an accounting exam in college that didn’t even deserve 2%. I still don’t know what Earnings per Share is… Would I be right in thinking I’m 71% of the way there now? (Bearing in mind, I’m a mathematical simpleton!) :)

    Hey,

Claralara.... some of the guys will know me from DCM 2010 but I haven't been on much. If I can offer two pieces of advice.

Marathon belt - I had one of these and trained with it for bout two months but on race day it took the back of me....make sure you go out a couple of times with a full load out....eg for your 20 miler...I didn't and I paid the price on that..

Second, and this was something that I haven't noticed being raised on any thread I looked at but you should maybe consider getting used to running with two separate gels? I used the maximuscle gels for my training runs and was grand but on the day...I had 3 per my hydration schedule and couldn't stomach any more of them cuz my stomach was in knots. I ran the remaining 15/16 miles with nothing but water....and I also noticed I got more thirsty closer to the end....this I believe was as result of not pre hydrating enough....

Finally, also make sure you have some good recovery food for after the run together with the obvious copious amounts of water. But have a specialised recovery drink there too as you will need to replace the salts that you have lost durnig the LSR and on race day..... (If you drink too much water and not replace ur salts it can mess you up - learned the hard way in LSR)

Anyway....essay over.... looking forward to following your run in for the connemarathon

    Good luk :)
