Proper Diabetes care in Dublin [moved from tGC]

    My Dads type 2 Diabetes is going from bad to worse and his GP is not exactly helping. Does anyone know of anywhere in Dublin I can bring my Dad in specialises in Diabetes care.

    There is diabetic centre in Tallaght hospital. GP only gives the prescriptions for renewal but they diagnose it and decide what needs to be done.

    The guy who set up the clinic in Tallaght has a private clinic in Northumberland Clinic in Dun Laoghaire and is said to be the very best person on diabetes in the country.

    Getting good advice from a competent doctor is always good but the way to improve his Diabetes is to firstly increase the level of monitoring. This will establish what areas need to be adjusted (by either diet or medication). By adjusting his patterns and carefully monitoring/ testing blood sugars whilst the adjustment is carried out you should be able to help.

    Agreed that management and monitoring are crucial but the truth is that a GP is a general practitioner and therefore not fully versed in all aspects of diabetes. Additionally, many people become overwhelmed by diabetes, which leads to panic and then paralysis by analysis.

    Patients need to be educated in how to manage all aspects of the condition and how to prevent complications from setting it. This is why specialists in the area are crucial for support on an emotional, physical and practical level and strategy planning and regular comprehensive tests reduce and in some instances eliminate the risk of complications which include blindness, amputation, organ failure and stroke.

    Im a Type 1 Diabetic myself and have been the last 5 years and attended Tallaght Hospital clinic visiting Dr Barragry but he soon to retire and have met his replacement Dr Moore he is meant to be A1, he's mainly in Naas general im told ??

    The GP can refer him to a DESMOND or X-PERT course - they are free diabetes education course run by the HSE and he could find out from the other attendees where they go for their diabetes treatment.

    Then the Diabetes Federation of Ireland run CODE courses - same thing just shorter waiting lists and tend to be run in the evening.

    I've heard lots of good things about all three courses and it would probably be a good place to start.

    There's also a diabetic clinic in Connolly Hospital in Blanchardstown. The DESMOND course there is very informative.

    There is one in most of the major hospitals (Vincents, James, etc.) your GP should have already rang them and made an appointment ASAP as the waiting lists can be long, depending on luck really.

    here's some contact info for x-pert courses. anyone can put their name down - don't need to be referred by a GP.
    the waiting lists aren't long (in my area of dublin anyhow!)
