I'd wait a few weeks for things to warm up a bit.

All year round in the South West 12 months of the year, except May 15th - June 15th.

Heading down to the South West in a few weeks and going to try for bass. Beach I have in mind has loads of breakers normally and a small river feeds into it so we were thinking if there are any bass that they'd be in and around the surf close to the river to catch whatever comes down from there.

Any hints, tips or obvious gotcha's for a bass novice? Going to try spinning for them!

I would join www.sea-angling-ireland.org , you will get loads of info there on tactics, baits, rigs etc ...great place for a beginner to learn.

To reply to your post, spinning for bass is not generally carried out on open beaches, you need rocky out crops, estuaries, calmer water for spinning. People are slow to give out marks but once you get to know people and you gaain their trust they may let you in on a few good marks.

If you want to fish the surf beaches you need to ledger with baits such as lugworm, crab, razorfish or sandeel.

This time of year peeler would be my choice, and for bass punger peeler is best but not always easy to find
