I'm glad the bike was found, but why the thieves were not reported to the police? Are they just getting away with it?

Reading between the lines, it doesn't sound like they 'got away with it'.

    :D

    Morning Boardsies,

Here is a question for all & perhaps some legel eagle may be able to clarify an answer. If John E Scumbag or Mary B Toerag steals a bike & puts it up on an online selling site & sells the bike before the owner can do anything to prevent it. Can the owner persue the website for selling stolen property allbeit unbeknown to them, that being said John E Scumbag has history on a site for selling multiple highend or even just run of the mill bikes & the site are just happy to oblige & I assume take a percentage of the sale. Do they(the site ) not have any obligation to check the ownership of the item being sold, ie proof of purchase by the individual selling the item?

In my eyes they are facilitating a criminal act by allowing the afore mentioned Mr Toerag use them to sell stolen goods!

    Thanks for reading.

Isn't this very similar, if not the exact same, as what happened Megaupload and other such sites. Granted the percentage of stolen goods is completely different on each site.

If we/the victim don't take the matter seriously, how can we expect the gardai to do it?

In my eyes the thieves didn't learn the lesson and next time the victim might not be so lucky to spot the stolen bike

Here is an interesting solution for bike theft. By making the actual frame part of the lock, to steal it you have to physically break the bike, defeating the purpose of stealing it in the first place.

So they just cut the seat post a bit shorter then manipulate out the locking part later. I think they'd got through a bit of aluminium faster than most locks. Far from unstealable.

I'd imagine they're an eye watering price and will end up in the same bin as the invisible helmet.

Looks like they are trying to market it in a similar way to the invisible helmet also! That's 3 links in the forum to separate articles on the "unstealable bike" in about a week - the previous one in this thread (posted on the previous page) did highlight one or two reservations.

A friend's Specialised Tri Cross bike was stolen in Fairview last Thursday night. As you can see it's black and brown in colour with red bar tape. Reports of any sightings very welcome.

A friend's bike was stolen from his car outside Sundrive velodrome on Saturday afternoon (on the pavillion side). It's a very distinctive bike and brand (Guru) so I'd appreciate if any sightings were reported. Please see photo below:

    Hi all,
I had my Specialized Tri-cross stolen on Thursday last the 28th of August.
It was stolen in Fairview in Dublin 3.
    Its Black/Brown in colour.
    Red Tape on the Handlebars.
    Size XL.
I've had it for a number of years and I'm really gutted.
Any help would be really appreciated.
As a tip for people, it was locked with one of those Kryptonite wire locks, which he just snipped through. They are useless!!
    Thanks
    Dermot

Sorry to hear mate a picture would be a help.

A little off topic but where are all these stolen bikes going? I'd doubt anyone actually into cycling would buy a stolen bike as they would likely be seen on it or just wouldn't be into buying stolen goods period, and it's not like you see kids riding around on €1000 bikes in the worse off areas are they leaving the country I wonder?

Gardaí in the "J" District are carrying out an initiative to help reduce bike thefts and to ensure bicycle owners retain information about their bicycle in order that if it is stolen and recovered it can be easily identified.

This morning as part of the initiative Garda Lisa Martin and Garda Colm Tracey, Clontarf Garda Station distributed bicycle id cards with explanatory leaflets to cyclists at a checkpoint on the Howth to Dun Laoghaire cycleway at Clontarf.

A good start, but maybe a bit more action on reported thefts would help too

It's under your bottom bracket flip the bike over you'll see it.

Also if you take a picture with your phone it will be time/date stamped in case there's any arguing ownership later on.

I know this is a regular occurrence in Dublin but my bike got stolen tonight (outside Four Star Pizza in Fairview - literally left for only a minute).

Details of the bike are as follows:

Cube Peloton, white with black and red markings,
    Now has black saddle,
Blue sign affixed to handle bars from Ring of Kerry charity cycle,
    Black tape on handle bars,
    Black water bottle holder,
    Cube saddle bag,
Digital monitor attached to handle bars,
Three lights - one on handle bars, one on saddle bag and one on back at side of wheel.

I use my bike for commuting to work and this Summer I did the Ring of Kerry cycle which I never thought I would be able to do. Needless to say I have grown attached to the bike and am now very distraught!

If you do hear of anything I would very much appreciate it if you could PM me.

I would be willing to pay a reward if this bike is retrieved.

    Many thanks

    Sinéad
