my first ever batch of these has just entered the freezer.

had to use vanilla whey instead of chocolate. I'm interested to see how they taste (and fill me up!)

Well mine always are. I'm probably doing something wrong but I don't really mind.

My first batch are in the freezer, very messy but they smell delicious cant wait to try them out!

What I have found with these bars is that they work out much better if they are mixed really well.
I also hold back a bit on the water so the mixture is not quite so sticky.
It's not really possible to mix it like this by hand as the mixture is really thick so I use a kenwood chef on a low speed for it.

Making these again tonight. Adjusting the amounts by a little so the bars come to an even 200 cal.

    140g whey protein powder
    80g rolled oats
    30g Almond meal
    60g peanut butter
    25g desicated coconut
    20g maple syrup

    Makes;
    8 Bars: 200 Cals. 18 protein, 12 fat, 9 Carbs
    Or
    6 Bars: 266 Cals. 24 protein, 16 fat, 12 Carbs

Edited the above, forgot to include almond meal. Decided to use that instead of chopped almond.

Here's a recipe for tasty, chewy, snickers-like home made protein bars.

    What you need:

70g good quality non added sugar peanut butter (2 tablespoonfuls)
180g whey protein powder (6 scoops, I used chocolate flavour)
90g rolled oats (around 3 WPC scoops)
30g ground flaxseed (3 tablespoons, preferably freshly ground)
    20g maple syrup (1 tablespoon)
30g whole almonds (around 25 almonds)
    150-200ml of water

    80937266.jpg

Combine peanut butter, whey protein, rolled oats and flaxseed in one large bowl and mix it together. Start adding water and keep mixing everything using your hand (the best way to do).

    17680133.jpg

Keep mixing until there is nothing dry left in the bowl and sticky batter is formed. Now add maple syrup with almonds and mix it thoroughly.

    33183198.jpg

The next thing to do is to form it in a flat shape. To make it easier you can use ziplocked freezer bag, fold it in half and spread the batter evenly.

    68188944.jpg

Now put it in the freezer for 1 to 1,5h and cut into 7 equal bars.

    27722359.jpg

    Each of them yields:

    266 kcal

    25,7g of protein
12g of fat (of which 7,1g monounsaturated and 2,8 polyunsaturated fat)
12,5g of carbs (of which 3,2g dietary fiber)

I wrap them individually in tin foil and store in fridge.
Believe me, these bars taste amazing, are cheap, packed with protein, full of healthy fats and low in carbs. They are perfect as a meal replacement on the road.

    Enjoy!

Just made my first batch. In the freezer can't wait to try one. :-D

yeah, I agree they get a bit sticky

so less water next time, and use a mixer!

Sticky finish or sticky during to making process.

Have a dough mixer would it work in that. It's my wife's ;)

I dont thinkk it would work in a mixer, they will be sticky just because if what they are.

    sticky after making
    that is main complaint

I must see can I add something to reduce that

I find almond meal instead of whole/chopped almonds helps reduce stickiness

Planning on making these tomorrow evening.

Just need to get flaxseed, almonds and peanut butter.

lads - I have started cheating a little with these and use two bars of the aldi dark chocolate (85%) blitzed in the microwave with peanut butter, honey and some milk for the wet mix.

The dry mix is protein powder, oats, almond meal, dessicated coconut and some dried fruit ( normally cranberries )
What it means is when the bars cool they are actually hard like a chocolate bar although they dont snap like one they are still soft and gooey to eat.
    A bit like a brownie.

Here's another. Suitable for keto or low carb diets.

    PEANUT BUTTER FUDGE
    50g cup butter
    65g cup peanut butter
    30g cream cheese, softened
10-15g Splenda or other powdered sweetener
1 scoop of whey protein powder, vanilla or cookies n cream

Melt the butter and peanut butter together in the microwave for 30-60 seconds. Mix well.
Stir in the cream cheese until well blended and smooth. Stir in the Splenda then the whey protein powder and blend well.
Line a baking dish with baking paper or nonstick foil. Spread the fudge mixture in and chill or freeze until set. Cut into 10 squares. Store in the refrigerator or freeze.
Works out about 100 cals each.

I've only made it once, so might play with the amounts next time.

Made these bars last night. Left them in the freezer all night. Took them out for an hour this morning and attempted to cut them and it just wasn't happening so I'll be tasting them later.

    Batter tasted lovely though.

Oooh! Fab, I've been looking for a cheap alternative to protein bars. At the height of my Motivation diet, I was paying €30 a week for 14 of their protein supplements. Complete rip-off! Even so, they did work to a degree so if anything, I'll give this recipe a go and hope it works out. Overindulged majorly over the holidays so anything that can help with the weight loss is a godsend.
Is there any particular brand of whey protein powder you'd recommend? I've used the vanilla Holland & Barrets one in the red barrell (can't remember the exact name) in the past and it tasted utterly revolting. Also, the barrell was half empty!

flapjacks are easy, what about Oh Yea!, USN Protein Delite, Supreme Protein Carb Conscious,
they taste amazing compared to some of the disgusting and overpriced bars out there

  • Registered Users Posts: 39,022 ✭✭✭✭Mellor

These are made weekly now in my place.
My girlfriend is hooked now too. She started a low carb high protein diet and she can't get over how much nicer these are than branded one, plus better macros. Even her work mates have requested the recipe.

I'm always looking for variations too. Gonna try a bounty/coconut version soon. Will report back.

    simple rule IMO is -

Goal is fat loss = go for my primal/paleo bar (lower carbs)

Already quite lean and function ok on some carbs = make the flapjacks (higher carbs)

Want to gain weight = make both, eat clean (90% of the time) like there's no tomorrow and lift weights often

My package from MyProtein arrived today so I might make this tonight with Choc Coconut True Whey.

I didn't make the flapjacks with choc coconut in the end. I did have two scoops of it this morning after my workout. Its nice. Much nicer then the impact whey choc coconut but I don't like the thickener they use in the choc True Whey. Makes all the choc flavours a bit gloopie.

My OH made these last night - damn tasty!

    319757_292817997507711_1011213029_n.jpg

Recipe from her 'strong over skinny' blog..
Low Fat Low Carb High Protein Granola bars

150g Coconut Milk (you can use any milk really)
    85g cashew butter
    2 scoops of Protein

    blend the above

    Add;
    As much mixed seeds, dried fruit and nuts as you like and you can even include some rolled oats or banana. I opted to leave them out to make it low carb. They are still full of energy though;

    I added 50g Linseed
    50g Seseme Seeds
    50g Sunflower seeds
    50g Raisins

I'll probably eat them all before she gets home from work :D
