Might this be a good space to flag up things that are going on in the county? I suppose it might be best if they are free events, or if entrance charge then for charitable or non for profit cause. (so that not advertising private events) Perhaps one of the mods could advise? Anyway thought might be nice to flag the local events for national heritage week in leitrim in case folk hadnt spotted. They are free!

There's no problem with posting up details of events so long as they are community or charity driven events or anything that will be of benefit to the community.

Posting anything else will result in a banning and deletion of the offending post. There is no free advertising allowed here with the exception of the above.

Common sense as ever should prevail and if anyone is unsure just send a PM in advance with the details to myself or nanook and we will let you know if its OK or not.

Wanted to put this up in the whats on in Leitrim thread.
Theres a a film weekend with films based on works of the novelist Edna O Brien coming up this weekend (28th of September) in Dromahair. They also have the novelist herself for a questions and answers sessiun which I would have thought is a coup.
    http://www.irishfilm.ie/index_132.asp
Its a joint venture between the the Irish Film Institute (a company limited under guarantee with charitable aims) and Cinema North West who are supported by Leitrim CoCo. Cinema North West is formally the Cinemamobile now relaunched under this name. It brings cinema and in particular cinema as an art form (eg world cinema) to rural spots in Leitrim. This is their third as they call it "Adaptation" festival. Before they have done a festival celebrating the works of John Mcgahern amongst others. The North West Cinema is set to expand in partnership with Sligo Co Co, so it will be getting to more isolated places. A worthwhile venture I am sure ye'l agree. :)

Yes I hope it goes well. Not involved in it myself but would hope to support it. Nice to see people mobilising to bring things like this to rural areas as well as the likes of the IFI as a national body outreaching beyond the pale. There would be alot of older people in the area that I am sure would be interested in Edna O Briens works having lived through the Ireland of that time, and might not necessarily have the transport to be getting to a film season like that in the larger towns/cities. I am sure theres a few lads still holding a torch for her too, they'l get a chance to meet her.:)

It went very well from what I could see. Went to see the interview with Edna O Brien and she was terrific. Witty, self-deprecating, engaging and a great looking woman who must now be in her 70's. She spoke honestly of her books and film adaptations. E.g. She wasn’t at all enamoured with Elizabeth Taylor whose apparent ego got in the way of doing a good job on Zee and Co.
She appeared to find it difficult that the critics have been quite hard to her in the past. She likened herself to John McGahern in getting banned. The only difference in her mind was that he got accepted back and forgiven; she has never been forgiven she felt for pushing boundaries. She felt that might have been down to her being a woman. She spoke of her technique in writing and had no formula. Sometime it flowed in weeks sometimes it took a lifetime.

She spoke of Clare being her inspiration. It appeared that the postive aspects of Clare protected her from loneliness in many aspects, even though she was aware of many of her peers less well off in the london were she emigrated to in the 1950's.
    Well you asked! :)

The Dock in Carrrick-on-Shannon, http://www.thedock.ie/, a brilliant asset to the town, I can't believe the council wanted to tear it down a few years ago!! They have some great workshops, classes, gigs and exhibitions on. There's also a little coffee shop/wine bar.

I spent the June bank holiday weekend last year in Carrick on a stag... we rented 2 boats from Emerald Star, 6 lads on each boat. The best stag weekend I've been on - picked up the boats from the Marina, parked them at Gings & apart from the odd trip up as far as the locks on either side of Carrick, the boats stayed moored! Pure chaos. I'd definitely do it again though - a great way to spend a weekend, be it with friends or family.

I thought I'd flag up this local festival. Theres street markets, kids events in the park, workshops on music, historical walks, local drama, and live music etc etc etc.

I see Seamie O dowd is playing with his band. ((most of those nervous animal afaik!) He played last year and was hopping.

The following is the details so far. I pulled it from a local Parish newsletter I uncovered. (Me mother would be proud!)

Following the success of the Dromahair Demon Festival last summer the Dromahair in Transition Group is organizing this year's festival. The festival is named after Drom Dha Eithiar the Irish name for the village and is translated by many authorities as the Ridge of the Two Air Demons. This year's festival will be held on Saturday 27 th June starting at 2.00pm, a parade at 6.00pm leading to the main stage entertainment at 7.00pm with dancing, music & children's events.

your funny , ill give you that, but i bet you didnt know that almost all natives of leitrim are related, such as faughnans, o rourkes, mc governs, tighe, mc keon, and so on

of you go back trough anyones family tree in leitrim they all are related somehow or another, and then names such as mc weeney, doherty, mc caffery, o donnell and so on all came from donegal in the 17th century, and settled in leitrim,

so theres a bit of history for ya on as thursday evening.

Heritage week is coming up in Leitrim too. Have just cut and pasted this from the site. Just a couple of things compared to Sligo but still. The famine lecture and tour looks good.

Heritage Week 2009 will run from the 22nd to the 30th of August. In Ireland Heritage Week is co-ordinated by the Heritage Council with support from the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government and Fáilte Ireland.

    What is Heritage Week?

Each year many national and hundreds of local community organisations participate by organising events throughout the country. There is something to appeal to almost everyone and the main aim is to build awareness of our built, natural and cultural heritage thereby encouraging its conservation and preservation.
    What's On?

There is something taking place in every county and most activities are free of charge or offer great value for money.

    In Leitrim

i dont know , but my opinion was that our heritage went out the window , when we started turning on one and other over money, and building houses on the corner of bog meadows,

i suppose it could draw some yanks in whos great great grand parents came from leitrim, but almost anything organised by the state either goes a mile over budgety ,or doesnt turn out to be what it was advertised to be, or both

But turn on one and another is our hertiage...

I dont know I reckon it would be just the thing that we all should go on to reclaim some of our heritage. And the developers, they should be forced to go as part of some NAMA rehabilitation thing like community service or something. The yanks sure I'll leave them alone they could put some of us locals to shame with their level of interest and knowledge. It wasnt the second/third generations that were ripping the place apart.
And sure am with Moonbaby if the events are'nt great (free and all as they are) sure we'll head to the pub for a whinge.
Sure that is main thing to do in Leitrim alright!

    Hi all

Just been reading through here and was wondering if anyone can offer any tips for an upcoming trip.

I'm staying in Drumshambo from 8th -10th September, looking to find any events or info, or attractions (apart from those mentioned earlier) for this time of year.

    Thanks in advance

If one of them there dates is a Monday, you're in luck. That's Bingo night:D
Seriously though, there's sailing on Lough Allen and horse riding just outside the town and paint balling a few miles away. Loads of decent pubs too. Conway's (locally known as Gunning's), Henry's and Monica's (especially for trad music) are all busy spots. I love Conway's.

Some of my family had a great few days in Leitrim recently. They stayed in a house in the grounds of The Ramada Hotel, so they could use the facilities. They also went on a boat trip and drove to Enniskillen. So Leitrim is highly recommended.
