Anyone willing to share experiences of nursing home in the Galway city area?
I have been reading Hiqa inspection reports etc., but would prefer a personal recommendation.

For example, Googling Oranmore Nursing Home led me to an Irish Times article from August 2012, which reads:
the inspectors said they were very concerned about the inadequate response of Oranmore Nursing Home to allegations of abuse and its failure to take suitable and sufficient measures to protect one of the residents. Details of the allegations are NOT contained in the authority’s five inspection reports on the home.
    :(

What did you end up doing? I'm now looking for one in Galway for my dad who has dementia and parkinsons.
    Thanks

My mother spent some time in Oranmore Nursing Home for convalescence, and we had no complaints. But when she required full-time care we went to Coral Haven (Headford Road).

It's hard to say that any Nursing Home is great, because at the end of the day they are sad places, but absolutely no complaints about Coral Haven either. Let's say the atmosphere is a little less sad than some other homes I have seen.

Another home I have heard good things about is St. Mary's (Shantalla), but I believe there is a long waiting list as they are operated by the Catholic Diocese and retired members of the clergy get first preference.

If dementia is a factor, as it was for us too, you will need a home that is set up to care for that condition. I know Western Alzheimers run their own specialist home near Athenry. But they will also be happy to speak to you about their experience with other homes.

You can get a full list of homes from the HSE's Nursing Homes department, which is based in Ballybane.
Then have a look at the latest Hiqa inspection reports for any home you are considering, and don't hesitate to raise any concerns with the manager.
