Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

Off road walking/running trail

    Hi,
    I know there have been a few threads before on routes - but most seam to be on paths or concrete. Anyone know of any good off concrete tracks or trails around Athlone?

    Anyone tried Moydrum forest - google maps seams to show a loop through the forest - is it public accessable?

    Any public way into the forest area near monksland?

    Any marked masspaths for example? Walks by rivers with styles over fences?

    Have previously come across http://www.offaly.ie/eng/Services/Walking/ and the routes are great - but they are just a bit of a drive away.

    I sometime go for a run in portlick forrest(I think thats what its called anyways) out near Glasson. Im not native to athlone but Im pretty sure its not the same as the one you mention. It has about 7k of a mixture of single track trails and a main gravel road that links it all together. Goes from forest to lake side. 10-15 min drive from athlone but a lot nicer run than urban stuff

    Portlick is great for some off-road jogging etc. Didn't know there was a forest in Moydrum that was accessible but I haven't tried. If you are willing to venture further out, Newcastle woods near Ballymahon is lovely.
