I've melted another of these and I'm all outta unmelted spares.
These things are a joke as electrical appliances go.

The ceramic sockets aren't so bad because they can withstand a cigarette lighter, the non ceramic type...don't even bother.

Most of these I take apart are under wired and over fused.

    Lets look at the design:

    This is a 5A plug:

Notice the contact surface area, durability and thermal transfer abilities. These fit securely into three barrel receivers.

    Now here's a 13A plug

    Notice the similarity.

Now look at Brand X cig. lighter plug

15A !!? Spring loaded point contact and cantilevering from the socket!
    Someone's having a giraffe!

Does this look familiar to anyone?

    This is a 16A plug!!

Simple fix, go to the electrical supplier and ask for Hella/DIN plugs, very similar design to the Cigar lighter type but a lot stronger and better connections.
Easily retrofittable to the dash in place of the cigar type.
I use them in any stuff that needs to be secure rather than convenient.

Aha! I had wondered what these sockets were for in a second hand van I bought! :)

The van or the previous owner? :D

The van was an Irish conversion, don't know about the owner! Had those little sockets everywhere.. I wrongly presumed they were connections for a lamp considering they were Hella. You're dead right, they are a very sturdy little connection.
