The Twisted Nerve Label

Twisted Nerve was founded in late 1997 by Grand Central DJ and designer Andrew Shallcross (aka Andy Votel) and singer-songwriter Damon Gough (aka Badly Drawn Boy). The label was originally inspired by a wide range of alternative influences such as one off soul records, french EPs, a cottage industry, a rebellion to dance music, making something out of nothing, hip hop, b-grade US psych bands, breaking down musical boundries, jukebox records, pushing your luck, music and design in unison, Woody Allen and manufacturing singles in Nashville, Tennessee. Andy and Damon didn't want to set up a business. They wanted to make five hundred 7" records with cheap two colour sleeves and sell them to their friends before the end of the year. They sold the records in less than a month and soon after got embraced, mithered and intimidated by the music industry. They then got another record made and proceeded to put out records by our like-minded friends and then they became a record company, made films, designed graphics and organised events.



Misty Dixon

Based around the songwriting talents of Jane Weaver, Misty Dixon stemmed from Jane's desire to form an all girl group and do something outside of her solo work. Initially Misty Dixon was supposed to be just a studio-based project - darker than Jane's solo work and more influenced by her sad heavy metal past. Jane persuaded Anna Greenwood to sing with her after they were thrown out of and barred from Matt & Phred's Jazz Club in Manchester for singing All Saints songs whilst a jazz band played. The owner told them they sounded like whores.

The first track Jane wrote for Misty Dixon was 'I, So Many Times' which appeared on the Milk Money EP released in Spring 2001. She wrote it on an old Farfisa organ she discovered in a second hand shop under a load of junk - she claims she knew it was there because she had a funny feeling, similar to when Lovejoy finds a rare antique.



Aidan Smith

One fine day late last summer at TN Towers, TN were listening to the usual round of demos when we stumbled across a gem. Several attempts to contact the sender drew a blank until a month later emails were returned and Mr. Smith walked into our lives. He handed TN a CD with 20 songs on it and told them he had "a few more songs" which he would bring in the next week. Since that time he gave TN around 70 songs of home recordings, 14 of which will be released over two 7 track mini-albums, the first of which you should be holding in your grubby little paws sometime in April.

Just 23 years of age and hailing from Eccles, Aidan Smith has managed to soak up most of the best music of the 20th century and make something new that is completely his own. Since his first release, the song 'Bongos & Go' on the Jukebox 45 Singles Club in October he has been snapped up for his debut TV appearance, been tapped by prospective collaborators (we can't name names), and is currently holed up in deepest Lancashire recording his debut album.



Jukes

Tammy Payne was previously signed to Talking Loud in the label's heyday and she plays drums / sings in Jukes. She writes all the songs and produces her records with Jim Barr (Portishead bass player). Jesse Morningstar plays guitar with Jukes and is known as one of the legendary Moonflowers. Mark Barber plays bass and sings with Jukes - he is the man behind Pop Parker, and is an ex member of Bristol guitar band the Chesterfields and also the Experimental Pop Band. Jukes made their first recorded appearance on Twisted Nerve's Jukebox 45s Singles Club (which has also seen releases by Aidan Smith, Mugison, Teenage Fanclub and a host of others) and their debut LP will be released in Spring 2004 on Twisted Nerve.



Andy Votel

You've heard all the other stuff before. He has over 100 pairs of trainers, used to mess around in vague Northern hip hop crews, loves hats and Polish Jazz, lives in Marple and has more records that Ikea can provide him with shelf space for. The 2000 compilation Finders Keepers is a microcosmic sample of his ever-expanding musical worldview. But it's really time for this smokescreen of trivia to be dispersed. Instead, focuspoint on two things that say more about Andy than his caps. In 2002 Andy completed his first LP proper in "All Ten Fingers". Moving on from the promising but still speculative debut mini LP, Styles Of The Unexpected (released in late 2000) this is imbued with a confidence and an organic willfulness which is strides ahead of those still smoking too much draw and sellotaping beats together in front of computer screens. It's gritty and real and funny and human and broken and twisted and completely addictive.

Born in the late '70s to two neuroscientists, Josh bought his first guitar from the local K-MART after hearing the Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash classic "Girl From The North Country." He began Oberlin College with the intent to follow in his parent's scientist footsteps, but instead, discovered songwriting and the music of artists like Gillian Welch, Townes Van Zandt, and Leonard Cohen. He graduated and then moved east for its close proximity to historic folk clubs like Club Passim in Boston. On a shoestring budget he recorded his critically acclaimed break through album Golden Age of Radio in 2001 at various tiny, one-room studios on the East Coast.

In the fall of that year, Josh pressed up several thousand copies of Golden Age, which quickly sold and funded more touring. A copy found it's way into the hands of Jim Olsen and Signature Sounds Recordings, and the record was released nationally in the US in January 2002. Critics called the modest album "stunning," "elegant," and "damn near perfect," landing Josh in the pages of Details, the New York Times, and Maxim.

Meanwhile, at a Boston open mic that spring, Josh met Glen Hansard, the lead singer of The Frames. Hansard invited him to open a string of shows for the band in Ireland. Josh's career took flight in Ireland, buoyed by the single "Me & Jiggs," which entered the Irish Top 40 and helped gain Josh full blown cult status, complete with sold-out headline tours, late-night TV appearances, and his very own cover band in Cork. Josh ran the gamut at the Irish Hot Press Reader's Poll Awards, landing in the Top 5 for Best International Folk Act, International Male Songwriter, and International Male Singer, putting him in the company of Springsteen, David Gray, and Johnny Cash.

Josh would spend much of 2002 splitting his time between the US and Ireland, sharing bills with such eclectic artists as Beth Orton, Liz Phair, Damien Rice, and Joan Baez, as well as a celebrated appearance at the 2002 Newport Folk Festival. In the process, he garnered impressive acclaim not only for Golden Age of Radio but also for his richly textured and intimately engaging live shows. Publications like The Village Voice, The Washington Post, and The Irish Times scrambled to describe what made Josh's music so "stunning." Sold-out shows in New York, Boston, and Dublin, as well as a trip to the Sundance Film Festival kicked off 2003 in style.

In February of this year, rested, refreshed, and more than ready to make a new record, Josh entered Black Box studios in rural France with his touring band and Irish producer David Odlum (the Frames, Gemma Hayes) to record Hello Starling. Recorded and mixed in only 14 days in an old dairy barn in the French countryside, the thick stone walls, high ceilings, and vintage gear, made for a record which sounds conversational and honest and shimmers with a new-found confidence. The 11 songs on Starling retain the feel and flow of another era; these are catch-tunes and earnest lullabies that rekindle the warm glow of a young Springsteen or Leonard Cohen in both their literacy and honest enthusiasm. "Kathleen," a summer anthem about waiting around a party to drive a girl home, is a live favorite; "Rainslicker" moves and sways with all the dust-stained imagery of the Clientele; and the show-stopping beauty of "Baby That's Not All" suggests an artist at the peak of his new-found powers.

The legendary Joan Baez recently recorded "Wings," the haunting ballad at the center of Starling, for inclusion on her new album, placing Josh alongside artists such as Gillian Welch, Steve Earle, and Natalie Merchant.

THE EX
Starting out as a punk band from Amsterdam and Wormer, The Ex has developed over the years into a melting pot of divergent musical styles, interweaving noise, punk, roots, jazz, classical and ethnic music under one unique umbrella: Ex-music. Other features are the discordant, highly rhythmic guitar work, the rolling almost African drumming style and the furious way in which they deliver their often sarcastic lyrics.

In the first few years, The Ex denounce political and social evils in their typical black and white manner and have gone on to speak out against injustices and infringements on human rights worldwide. Like Fugazi, they set a significant example for the alternative music circuit by which their records, accompanied by posters, booklets and other relevant readings, are released and distributed by the group itself to avoid the corporate music world altogether.

The Ex remains true to its original ideals and has continued to expand into an octopus of musical forces. The band's last record was recorded by Steve Albini at his Chicago studio. Albini's purist recording methods were the perfect complement to The Ex's purist music.

I Am Kloot formed in Manchester nearly four years ago. After a handful of live shows, which were attracting the attention of locals and critics alike. They were quickly snapped up by Manchester’s Ugly Man label who released their debut 7" single. Soon after the band signed to Wall Of Sound’s new offshoot -We Love You Records.

A string of brilliant singles followed and in March 2001 they released their debut album entitled "Natural History" . Critically recognised as one of the finest debut albums of the year, it more than confirmed their early promise as one of the best new bands around. Constant touring with a live show that is both unsettling and engaging, saw the group attract widespread acclaim in the U.K and across Europe.


Now signed to Echo Records , I Am Kloot have returned with a collection of new songs of the like they’ve so far only threatened. Combining twisted tales of love found (and always lost) with dark, yet perfect, pop melodies.

yes, simple kid is from cork. He was the main guy in cork band the young offenders. His first solo albul SK1 is available is PLugd and (i imagine) HMV, Virgin, etc and it's gettign tremendous reviews in the u.k. press, I highly recommend it.

He played Cork recently for the first time in about 5 years at the Lobby on November 22nd I think it was and a very good show it was too.

His brother, Alan, was the bass player in the Sultans of Ping.

In 1985 Joe Pernice and his big brother Bob recorded several songs at Fort Apache South, marking what can be considered the first phase of The Pernice Brothers. Put to sleep for a number of years, Joe Pernice concentrated on The Scud Mountain Boys where he was principal songwriter and vocalist. After leaving the Scud Mountain Boys to work on his own terms, Joe reserected the musical creative outlet known as The Pernice Brothers. Their debut album "Overcome By Happiness" was released to great acclaim with it's own distinct style of post brill-building pop. The recent album entitled "Yours, Mine & Ours" (out now on Independent Records) carries the same corrosive wit and uncanny human observation and again comes cloaked in velvety pop smarts. Joe Pernice also had his first book published. Based around The Smiths album "Meat Is Murder" it’s part of the 33 1/3 series (which is a series of short books about music) released by Continuum books in New York City.
