    Hi,

I have a 5 year old and we are having a week in Cork soon.

Can anyone recommend anywhere nice to go with the little one? I've been told about Fota, which I've planned, but what beaches are good and are there any kid friendly museums in the actual city centre vicinity?

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Ta.

    Fota you have...

For beaches, go past kinsale, over the bridge and try garretstown beach. It's two beaches separated by a cliff. One with sand dunes, the other with rock pools. Love both those beaches myself, very clean, great for sandcastles!

There is garryvoe the other direction.... Easterly, near ballymaloe. There is a decent playground by that one. A few stones on that one, and some seaweed.

Speaking of ballymaloe, they do a pizza afternoon/lunch thing which is a lot of fun for children. They can see it being cooked, loads of room to run around. http://www.saturdaypizzas.com

Museums, there is the blackrock castle observatory. Absolutely stuffed full of children at the moment, they are running space camp afternoons and treasure island afternoons around the castle.

Castle cafe on the grounds is nice, get the ice cream snowman for your 5 year old. :) it's a brownie with two scoops of icecream on top, and a meringue hat.

The crawford gallery in the city center is free. It's paintings and sculptures, but my kids love it for some reason. Near there are a few places to eat that mine love... On french church street is a creperie, across the road from a hot chocolate shop (o'conaills). Also nearby is wagamama if you like noodles.

The cork city museum in fitzgeralds park is free. It is a small museum, but has big model ships and a huge elk skull. That park also has the biggest playground in the city, exits at the west end onto 'the shakey bridge', and the infamous Sky Garden is over on the east side by the museum and cafe.

Bit of a funny one now, but the Cork Butter Museum is oddly interesting. Real quirky small museum dedicated to butter! Sounds awfully dull, but it's actually a great place. Weird things in there. They do a butter making session for children. http://www.corkbutter.museum It's in an interesting part of the city too. On top of the butter exchange building, and next to the firkin crane. It's by shandon as well.

If it's raining, the mardyke sports center has indoor climbing walls, I think they are doing childrens sessions, but best to phone ahead.

I could keep going all day... Another one is the cork sea safari. They do dolphin watching tours of the harbour. Great fun. I've only done this as a grown up, but maybe call them and ask if it's suitable for children. http://www.safari.ie

Rumleys open farm is very good. Bring a picnic and spend 4/5 hours there. Plenty of animals and a playground. They have a restaurant too serving decent lunch and dinners.
Theres plenty of indoor play houses too like chuckies, super nova and monkey maze if the weather is poor.

Wow, thanks everyone. That is a lot of information, maybe 5 days won't be enough. :)
