There is a large nerve that runs close to lower wisdom teeth. Its very important that the surgeon knows the relationship of the tooth to the nerve, unless having a permanently numb face wouldn't bother you.

A wisdom tooth consultation without a proper X-ray doesn't amount to much.

Thanks, but can anybody tell me what the average price of a dental x-ray in Ireland is?
I'd like to know whether I'm being ripped off here or not and should go somewhere else.

had a lower wisdom tooth out and while the surgeon said it was a awkward extraction it has healed fine for the most part. However I was given dis solvable stitches and told they would be gone within 7-10 days its out two weeks today and there is still a part of the stitching in my mouth. It seems to be slightly inflamed but not really causing me any pain, I was wondering should I wait it out or just go into my dentist and get it removed.

I went to the dentist yesterday (a regular visitor) after I had a rather painful infection in the back of my mouth. When my wisdom teeth started to grow, the bottom teeth grew straight up into the gum, so a flap still partially covers them. Very rarely a piece of food gets stuck there, and becomes infected. This hasn't happened in about 4 years, but happened over the weekend.

At age 20, the dentist I went to in the UK said that all 4 teeth were impacted, and the bottom teeth were resting on the nerve. It would be very dangerous to extract them as there is a chance of permanent numbness in the event that my nerves were damaged. I decided to leave the teeth as is, and many dentists over the years have agreed with this choice.

so, I went to a dentist yesterday and after examination and x-ray the dentist advised me that I should get all 4 teeth taken out. The x-ray shows that the teeth are still resting on the nerve, but the dentist told me that there is hardly any risk of damage these days!!! I asked how much the surgery would cost, and it works out at €350 per tooth, €100 surgeon's consultancy fees and €200 for sedation = €1700.

My questions are - are these the actual going rates? Are they just trying to get me to spend stupid amounts of money with them?

The actual surgery part doesn't bug me, but damaging my nerves for no reason other than to satisfy someone's pocket does!

P.S. Eathrin - my x-ray cost €35

Hi

Sedation was 100 extra for me

3 x Wisdom (1 impacted & other two were borderline, 1 was not erupted & was left) & 1 x baby tooth beside a wisdom tooth
2 x Premolars

Cost 650 in all & took 45 mins

I'm getting ortho work done so gave me a slight reduction..

I'd get a second opinion on above..

Just on Day 3 of recovery from a very painful lower Impacted wisdom tooth and bone re-shape ... seriously DAMN I never knew something so small could hurt so freaking much!

The root was right on the nerve leaving it exposed, the surgeon packed it up with with a self dissolving gel/foam in the socket which he reckoned gave the best chance of zero nerve damage or dry socket once stitched up.

Honestly right now I'm wishing there was some nerve damage LOL, I can feel EVERYTHING - managed to drive home afterwards was just on local anesthetic. As soon as I got back home though - oh wow the pain started!

I have been Prescribed Ponstan - which has simply been complete crap TBH, getting better pain relief from 2400mg of advil per daily + 3 paracetamol and thats just about keeping the pain at the bearable threshold.

On the + side, I'm living in S/E Asia and the cost was ..... 120 Euro including the Panoramic X-Ray

A few years back I had 9 composite fillings (4 major 4 minor) done over the course of 2 days (8 hours total) which ran me a total of around 100 euro.

All in all - I look like I just swallowed a grapefruit, feel like I just ate a wasps nest - and paid for the privilege. Hope it feels better soon.

Pic added of the offending bugger.

Week and a half on and 2 sets of stitches have dissolved meaning I dont wake up in the middle of the night with searing pain having clamped my teeth into them. Still have stitches in my lower gumline though.

And I can finally nibble slightly on squishy food, however any pressure on the rear teeth yet is really a no-no, and I cant brush anywhere near the area yet (mouth wont open enough) but at least off the painkillers.

Ugh... Mouth feels like a sewer mind you, some serious cleaning (and possibly whitening) is gonna be needed after this is all over.

God I'm dying for some real food, Pizza, Steak, Burger, Potatoes
