Nexium available over the counter - impact on medical card patients?

    Hello,

    I have seen ads on the TV advertising Nexium (esomeprazole) for sale over the counter in Ireland without prescription.

    Does anyone know if this has implications for someone on a medical card who has a prescription for it?
    At their next renewal will that medication no longer be covered under the medical card?

    Esomeprazole has not been withdrawn from prescription sale. You will still be able to get Esomeprazole on a medical card prescription once it is prescribed by your GP.
    (eg Zantac has been available for years OTC and is also available on prescription)

    Normally when drugs like this go to OTC (over the counter) they are usually at a lower dose than the same drug prescribed by your doctor. The availability of the drug on the medical card should be unaffected.
