Whats a freeride? Is it just going wherever the wind takes you?

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,171 ✭✭✭af_thefragile

    Ahmm...
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freeride

Its sorta the more extreme form of mountain biking where you do jumps, drop offs n a lot more tricks... Sorta like no rules, no boundries thing.

Urban Freeride is where u do the stuff in skateparks and around the city. Guess its just another name for trials riding.

? Not really sure I understand what it is but around the magazine fort in the Phoenix Park might be your best bet. Lots of hills, and some dirt tracks around the place (there'd be pedestrians on them though)

city centre wise, im always around temple bar, inside trinity, dublin castle and the likes.
too many pedestrians but trinity has some nice steps and drops and angled concrete which is nice.:D
security is a pain in the ass tho!:D

Yeah, trinity looks like a cool place for trying out some trial riding but i never knew if you're allowed to do all that in there.
I hardly see anyone trials riding around the city... Ya know if there's any sorta club or something for it?

pfft, you won't do much there.
There are teams of security guards patrolling the IFSC every day and they were there long before the LUAS works started.

They won't be slow about moving you on if you want to cycle around the square

what have i been doing for the past few months lol:D:D
**** security they cant do ****, a tree could do just as much, unless they call the guards and all that.
    SECURITY cant touch you.:D:D
had my run ins with them......cycle off then return 30secs later.

i dont think, freeriding in city areas is condoned, but i do it anyways.

I've seen them roar at the NCI students who skateboard around the place.
But the students do what they're told, unlike the cyclists it seems :D

Now that I think of it, there is not much at all in IFSC if you want ramps to mess around on.

While it's a good bit away the skate park in Swords is fairly big. I've no idea can you cycle there, just throwing the idea out there OP.

Edit: I know a place! Head out to Alfie Byrne Road in D3, and go the soccer pitches beside East Wall Business Park.
At the back of these there is a dirt path and loads of ramps.
The local undesirables use small scrambler bikes there but if you get a quiet day it's good for cycling.

you got my hopes up!! lol i spend my time getting away from the skangers!!lol

oh ye the NCI students have to move, they will prob get hassle from college. I dont study there so, i dont care!!!
if you really wanna ride somthing you can, security or no security.

nah in freeriding you dont need ramps, you just need imagination and balls of steel if you wanna be any good(im not:D)
drops, steps, hell you can jump anything, type ryan leech into you tube!! now you see!!, but he does trials, freeriding is more insane!!

^Aye, Ryan Leech, i love that guy!!
Its actually pretty much after seeing him ride trials n stuff that got me into this kind of biking. His Art of Trials instructional DVD is awesome. I'ld say it's a must have for anyone getting into trials/freeride.

ive the dvd,his voice is very very irritating tho, and im jealous of the **** he does:D:D
    smug bastid

    Aah well, he's from canada!
Though i'm really jealous of his skills too... He can freaking jump onto literally anything!

What bike do you usually use for freeriding?
Judging from your user name i presume you've got some sorta Kona.
I'm thinking of getting the Specialized P.2, think its any good for freeriding... At the moment that the best i can afford.

i built my own yoke, its a kona frame, hone cranks, 105 derailleur 9sp , and a set of bombers on the front!!!
the specialised are nore dirt jumpers, tbh youd get better spec for the same money, with specialised most of your money goes towards you frame.
    build it yourself!!!
parts are cheap this time of year!! that way you get a quality bike.
sure chain reaction have dirt jam pros for e130

I wanted something more all around bike for now.
Something i can take on mountain trails and then ride around the city and parks too.
As i'm a noob at all of this, i don't really need to get too specific getting a trials bike or a DH mtb. So i felt the Specialized P2 was the best all around.

But i think i could do a better job building up from a frame. I was looking for specialized frames but couldn't find any.
    You've got any recommendations there??
I'ld like something light as it'll be better for trials.

youll **** a light frame doin dh/freeriding thats why my frame is chromo.
ive a 16" fury frame for sale (its my frame before the kona) i changed before i wrecked it as it was too nice to wreck!!!.
i take my jump bike up howth, drogheda, wicklow, town skate parks.
the bombers are fantastic you can adjust them for dh, all mountain, xc what ever.
saracen make decent cheap bikes, check out irish dh for sale section, there are heaps of savage 2nd hand bikes for sale there....hopw much are you looking to spend??

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,171 ✭✭✭af_thefragile

I was looking to spend as much as to get me a Specialized P.2 cromo which costs about €850.
Anything cheaper than that would be great. I don't really have much to spend here.

I liked the P2's frame geometry and i herd it had a really strong frame which you could really trash around. Then i could practice some basic stuff like wheelies, manuals, bunny hops, pedal kicks on it, and could also then take it down some DH trial.

    Acutally found this..
    http://irishdh.com/forum2/viewtopic.php?t=4710

Might go for it instead and upgrade the components. Probably add gears to it.
    Whats your take at it??

Btw thanks for telling me bout the irish dh site...!

buy it!!! but make sure there is a dropout for gears!!!! and the frame can take em!!!
for 500 youd have a frame and a set of bombers!!!!!, then buy a carrera vulcan for e300 and rape it for parts, et voila a nice jump bike!!

    Too late, its sold!!!
    Damn!! :(

    what ones??
youd get a set of JNR T or all mountain1 for in around e300-e400:D
for e800 youd get a kona shred., or a 16" kona hoss(bomb proof all ounder)

The Specialized P2 cromo comes with Marzocchi DJ3 fork... It looks pretty descent.
Kona shred looks pretty much same as P2. Difference is it's got an alluminium frame and has a slightly different frame geometry. Slightly more expensive too.
Kona hoss is a little expensive too.

Well i think for now i'ld just go with the P2. I like specialized bikes and i like P2's shape.
Just gotta get the bike soon and hit the roads, parks, mountains, whatever comes in the way and my imagination!! :D

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,525 ✭✭✭kona

the DJ3 are very stiff, great for, dirt jump, and foolin round, but for drops they are hard on the wrists etc, although if you are doing more dirt jumping then they will be sweet!!!

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,171 ✭✭✭af_thefragile

Don't think i'll be doing any big drops anytime soon... As i'm just a beginner at this...
The DJ3's stiff suspension should probably do well for urban assault/trials riding n all which is what i'ld be doing more of for now.
I'll probably just change the fork later when i get into more extreme freeriding... or probably save up enough to get the specialized demo...!
