How could I get a club started? I'm hopefully going to Maynooth next year and I'm mad into all kinds of Motorsport. Would it be difficult to get a Motorsport club started?

I've no idea, I heard you have to have a certain number of names first.

Can you have a restricted club? Like could we say its for licenced drivers only for safety reasons and so we know we only have people that can actually drive something.

I havent a clue. I joined a few clubs in 1st year but they were pretty bad so didn't bother with it again this year.. this is something that would actually interest me, and others Im sure.

I'd say it could be possible, eg. you have to show your license upon signing up

Generally you would just have to tell the SU that you want to start a club and they will get you started, however you will get no funding until you have proven for the first year that you can support yourself as a club. If so you can apply for a capitation grant in the club's second year, which you would have to outline for the year the club's intentions, any events you plan to hold, and why you would need funding from the SU.

Getting numbers on Fairs day shouldn't be an issue as 1st years sign up to nearly every club that sounds half way interesting..

It should get decent support, I'd expect at least 100 members from 8,000 students. I was thinking karting, days at Mondello and those sort of things, as well as getting groups of people to watch the late night Grand Prixs (I don't know the plural) together, and getting groups of people to go to silverstone, Isle of man ect.

Thanks for the helpful replies everyone, the only thing is I will be one of the first years in September. I think I'll start looking at getting a group of people together around the end of August.

There is another faurs day (days where people sign up for clubs and socs) at the start of semester 2, so you could spend semester 1 finding some people interested in running the society with you (by putting up posters, asking around, setting up a soc facebook page etc) and sorting out the things that a society needs e.g. constitution, bank account. The SU will help you with all that.

Also, new clubs and societies do get a small capitation grant in their first year now.

Slightly off topic but try and have your stall on Fair's day as appealing as possible. We got near to 500members in the Cuallacht this year and I won't lie it was probably mostly due to the promotional material, balloons, brownies etc etc.
Also, when taking names for members I would advise to use a computer and a spreadsheet as opposed to pen and paper, makes it so much easier to transfer details when sending out membership emails.
