    Dear reader,

I would like to invite you to participate in a research study that is being carried out as part of my MSc Applied Psychology degree with the University of Ulster.

The title of my project is the effect of exposure to muscular body images on predisposing factors of muscle dysmorphia development.

    General Information:
The research is examining muscle dysmorphia, a mental disorder which is characterised by an extreme dissatisfaction with the individual’s own muscularity, which becomes a pathological distortion in the perception of their body image. This dissatisfaction usually presents itself in individuals who possess a highly muscular physique. Body dissatisfaction and a drive for muscularity have been suggested as the primary precursors which predispose individuals to developing muscle dysmorphia. This study examines the effect of exposure to muscular physiques on body satisfaction and the drive for muscularity. The study predicts that the greater the level of exposure to muscular physiques, the greater the body dissatisfaction. As high body dissatisfaction predisposes individuals to developing muscle dysmorphia, it can be deduced from the study that increased exposure to highly muscular physiques, increases the risk of developing muscle dysmorphia.

What do I have to do? Should you decide to participate prior to reading the participant information sheet at the beginning of the survey, you will be required to complete a short questionnaire which will occupy approximately 10 minutes of your time.

The link to my survey is https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/LF3LF58

If you read the additional participant information leaflet on the first page of the survey and would like to know more about taking part, please contact my supervisor, Dr. Karen Kirby (k.kirby@ulster.ac.uk) or me directly (Lillis-R@email.ulster.ac.uk). I will be happy to answer any questions you have related to the research.

Thank you so much for your time in advance.

    Yours sincerely,
    Rachel Lillis
