    Hi,

I'm very interested in learning German and have always wanted to travel, I'm looking into going to Germany for the summer and working. I see this as a great opportunity to experience something new in life, something I'll always remember.

I'm just wondering how hard is it to get a job in Germany, and how do I go about doing this? I've some experience in fast food and retail so ideally something in this area e.g barman etc. A big issue is that I actually don't speak German, I know a small bit but very little (hello, thank you ect) also for accommodation id be looking for something as cheap as possible and ideally sharing with other students or people my age.

I live in Düsseldorf, not speaking German is not a huge problem. Easiest place to start looking for work is pop into the Irish bars in whatever city you end up in.

One they will hire staff that speak little or no German and two the people there will always be able to point you in the direction of other English speaking jobs

Do I need anything to get started or can I just turn up and start? (Fill out forms ect)

you just need to register in the local town hall or citizens office (depending on the city your in) to get sorted out for tax etc.. and you'll need the letter from them when opening bank a/c.

its all very easy to do and 90% of staff in these offices will speak some level of English in the big cities anyway

As soon as you register you will be on the radar for health insurance, which is compulsory here. Make sure you have enough money to get BaFin approved health insurance (must cover nursing home charges in old age- a travel health insurance won't cut it). If you don't get it, then when you do find a job, the insurance company will twig it and send you a bill for back payments.

I have posted the same thing on other threads as well because as a student myself I have learned how difficult it is to get a job.

I have heard of people working online. You can just do simple jobs on 'online work' websites. you could offer to help people out with any retail questions or maybe even offer to tell them about your experiences with germany-anything at all.

A friend of mine has started up a new online work website called anybrief.com-its really good because he has a full marketing team who are ensuring that every job that people post get at least 200 people to view it each time.

Im pretty sure its free to get started as well.

I remember that even for a part time job in an Irish bar it took me ages to get the paperwork together so be ready for that! You need to get a place to stay then register with the town. IIRC I needed my lease, registration and passport to open a bank account. You also need to get a tax number and health insurance.
