Hi ,could anyone give me information on the internal wiring of son and metal halide fittings , as in the wiring configuration of the ballast , igniter , capacitor etc. I recently noticed connecting a 70watt son the fitting had no capacitor just a ballast is this the norm. Thanks in advance

The cap is for power factor correction/suppression depending on the design.

The fitting will work fine without it, but unless it was an electronic ballast (two wires in, and two out) it wouldn't be optimal, and I'd be surprised if it came that way from the factory.

some of the basic 70watt son fittings use a bulb with an internal ignitor

some fittings have external ignitor contained in the fitting itself

magnetic ballast fitting usually has capacitor fitted as well

Its a new 70w son just taken out of the box hilclaire is the make an defiantly no capacitor and the igniter is built into lamp.

there should be a pfc cap if it's a standard magnetic ballast

    i reckon

bulbs with an intternal ignitor have an i in a triangle stamped on them
bulbs that use an external ignitor have an e in a triangle stamped on them
you just have to watch this when changeing bulbs

    ya they're stamped

does this fitting have an electronic ballast? IF NOT THEN regardless of whether it has an internal or external ignitor i would of thought it being a 70 watt it should have a cap, think the 70 watt son uses a 12 uf cap. can ye post up the code off the fitting and i can have a look at the catalogue in the morning.

If its electronic ballast you wouldnt expect it to have a cap anyway.

    without photocell

i agree, i left out part of the sentence on my previous post. we do gear boxes for son and metal halide from 35 up to 150 watt and they require no cap or ignitior, just mains in one side and lamp holder out the other.

The capacitor is just to counteract the lagging power factor of the wire wound choke`s. Ordinary flourescent tube fittings with wire wound chokes/starter setup in them have capacitors for the same reason. They will work perfectly without them, but will take a slightly higher current per fitting for the same output without the cap.

the camino takes a son i lamp so according to the lads here if it has a son i lamp then it cant be a hf gear. according to the references i have in the job it should have a 12 uf cap.
