Programming Forum Charter
Bannable offense - this is at the moderators' discretion: Some discussions may be of value. Use your own common sense to decide.

General Stuff
1. No abusive posts.
2. Keep your temper.
3. No porn or inappropriate content.
4. Stay on topic.
5. Please try and avoid using leet (l337). Its original purpose doesn't apply here as this charter negates it use. Gibsons only exist in the movies. There is no spoon.
6. Please refrain from naming other users or the companies they work for.
7. Do not post the Personal Identifiable Information of any person who isn't you. And if it is you, you may want to question the wisdom of doing that.
8. Don't delete your posts without a good reason. They can break the flow of the thread and prevent future users from finding a solution.

Thread Prefixing
1. Please prefix your thread title where relevant. We currently have three prefixes.
• Question - for when you're asking a question
• Solved - for when you're problem has been solved
• n00b - for when you're new to programming, a language or just generally lack experience in the subject your posting about.

Crackz/Warez
1. No crackz/wares.
2. No links to sites containing them.
3. No explaining how to do it. This includes bypassing locks on evaluation versions of software.

Virii
1. No virii, no links to sites containing virii or virii source code.

Commercial Posting/Advertising
1. This is not allowed. Not just on the programming forum but across http://www.boards.ie/. Instant ban if you do, that goes for recruitment agencies too.
2. Marketing drives qualify as commercial.
3. As does providing/trying to provide tech support.
4. And business networking groups trying to recruit.

Starting a Company
If you are starting a tech company, and looking for a partner, perhaps this isn't the best forum for you? However, if you want to try please follow these rules:
1. You offering needs to be reasonable and well though out.
2. Posts consisting of 'I have an idea for an app that does <insert something here> need a dev to do this for me' will be deleted.
3. You should have a business plan and a decent elevator pitch at least, with those things in place, are you sure this is the best forum for you?
4. Posts will be deleted at moderators' discretion.
5. Don't ask for people to sign an NDA on the forum.

Recruitment
1. Post your jobs here.
2. Asking people, on the forum threads, to contact you or somebody you know about work is a bannable offence. Use the private messaging system. Yes I know this seems a little draconian and there's nothing wrong with a little networking - consider it to be a little dutch boy system: Plugging up this one little crack prevents us all from getting drowned.
3. Open Source Projects: If you want collaborators great, ask away. Have a look at the Open Source forum as well though. Post Your Code, if it's open source you'll have to share it anyway. If you project is to become a commercial project then please state this from the outset, such honesty will prevent your thread from being locked or deleted.
4. Community projects: If you're starting a community, i.e. non-commercial, based site or project then we'd love to hear about it. Please don't spam the forum or hijack other threads though.
5. Do not offer your services. Most people on this forum are programmers, they don't need you to do their job for them.
6. Positions advertised in the Situations Vacant sticky offering equity instead of salary in return for work will be deleted immediately.
7. Unpaid internships advertised in the Situations Vacant sticky will be deleted.
8. Positions advertised in the Situations Vacant sticky which are judged to be unreasonable or nonsensical will be deleted.
9. There is a Work & Jobs forum. Are you sure this isn't what you're looking for?
10. Don't ask for advice/review/what it's like too work for a specific company. Such threads will be deleted.

Asking a Question
1. Read this. Failure to follow those guidelines may result in your thread being locked.
2. Be reasonable and patient with beginners. You were one too way back when.
3. Try to wrap your code in the

tags. It makes it easier to read.
4. You'll get a better response if you give a brief description of you problem in the thread title. 'Help' isn't going to attract many answers.
5. Offering somebody money to do your homework will get you banned.

Answering/Discussing a Question
1. Keep all answers and suggestions on the thread. Asking users to pm you is not allowed. This is so anybody who has a similar problem in the future can view the solution suggested.

Wanting to Discuss a Technology
1. Great, then discuss it. Simply stating 'I'd like to discuss xyz' and leaving it up to everybody else to talk about it isn't good enough. Get the ball rolling yourself, we're not here to do your homework for you. These threads will be locked on sight.

Web Hosting
1. Questions about specific web hosting companies or how to use their services aren't allowed.
2. Looking for recommendations or suggestions for a web host are also prohibited.

Ask Me Anything Threads
1. Be respectful of the Original Poster - they've agreed to discuss their career for the benefit of others.
2. Do not attack somebody because of their answers or because of where they work or what they do.
3. It's at the OPs discretion whether they want to answer a question or not.
4. Forum rules apply.

Bad Experience?
1. If you've had a bad experience with an Irish company that is between you and that company, sort it out yourself. This forum is for the discussion of programming and software development. It is not a place for you to air your grievances.

Other Stuff
1. Other things my pop up from time to time, again these will be dealt with at the moderators' discretion.

RIGHT YOU 'ORRIBLE LOT!!!!

If you are a learning to code in college, in your first job or just out of interest here are the rules for beginners when asking questions:
• Try and give a good description of your problem in the thread title.
• Post a sample of your code no matter how poor you may think it is. It shows an effort on your behalf and that's really important.
• Try and explain your attempt in the previous point.
• Now ask any questions you may have.
• If there are any errror codes, messages, or a stack trace then post that too. I might look like gobbledegook to you but it contains everything you need to know to solve your problem.

Follow these rules everywhere, here, on other forums, in work, in college and anywhere else you can ask a question. A willingness to learn to very important in development and nobody will fault you for asking a question as long as you've made a prior effort.

You should also learn how to search the web. It's an acquired skill. If you repeatedly fail to come with a solution when searching well you should probably document your own efforts for the next person along, you young groundbreaker you!

Follow the rules above and we'll get along fine. Repeat offenders will be banned. Anyone who laughs and points, sneers or generally gets sniffy at a poster following these rules will be banned for sure.

All is well, consume.

Postscript: Asking for an paid accomplice in plagarising coursework? Welcome to an instant ban from the forum. Seriously, cop the fsck on.
