Drive appears to be on the way out, is it?

Hey all,

First drive failure of my life, If the drive is indeed dead.

My knowledge of HDD technology is too limited to interpret a full prognosis from this. How bad is she?

Also got a Win7 hdd fail warning.

Obviously a backup is already in progress, I'm compressing it to give me interim overhead so its slow but it'll be done in a few hours.

Thanks for your help,
ED E.

If SMART is failing it is not a good sign, time to backup and do a low level diagnostic using the likes of Vivard (on the ubcd). I'd try returning the drive if its in warranty now or just replacing it, even with no bad sectors tripping SMART is not good

Its the original drive in a 6YO dell, so warrantys out.

Suppose I'll have to grab a cheap 500GB to replace it for now. To amazon or to komplett..

Found a missing/unreadable sector, got Vivard running a remap pass to see if it can "fix" it. Will still swap it with one of my externals if I can clear enough space to move a few backups.

Probably should have grabbed the latest UBCD but I was lazy and used a ~2yo distro that I had sitting here.
