I'm looking for a decent car around the 3k mark, ideally a Golf as I've driven them for years and found them very reliable. I found the 1.4 quite under powered and not heard any good reviews of the 1.6 either.

There seem to be quite a few 1.8 GTIs around 2001 for 2-3k with mileage up around 120k miles. There are also a handful of 1.9 TDI's for sale with a slightly higher price tag and one or two 1.6.

Would a 1.9 TDI be a better bet at that year/mileage?

I'm looking at these two - both of whom have their timing belts/water pumps recently changed:

    Any thoughts?

A lot of 1.9s have had the stones ragged out of them, because they're perceived (incorrectly) as being faster than M5s and the likes, but a clean one owned by someone who isn't a boy racer will be a reliable bus.

A 1.8 GTI is less to have been ragged in a similar manner, so it could be a good buy.
