Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

Mazda MX5 mkII clutch/shifter problems.

    So a few days ago it became difficult to put my car in gear when I switched the engine on. Once I got going all was fine. After a day or so it got difficult to switch between gears while in motion too.

    It got progressively worse until I had to start the car in gear tonight after work. Half way home the clutch basically softened to nothing and the car now needs to be getting a bit of throttle when it's in gear or it will cut out. Basically the clutch is useless.

    Just about managed to get it home in to town. Any ideas what has happened? Surely the clutch isn't f*cked, it happened so fast!? I'm bringing it to a garage tomorrow and would like to be armed with as much info as possible. The garage is right next door to my apartment but the owner is a rip off artist. Without a tow truck I'm left with little other options.

    It's a 00 MKII Irish mazda Mx5.

    The internet is telling me it's most likely the slave cylinder as a result of how sudden this has all happened. Is that a big job in terms of labour? Any reason to think that isn't the problem?

    They are a common problem in the MX-5 I think, there's an Irish seller selling them on E-Bay here:

    The slave cylinder is just behind your drivers side front tire, you'll need to jack that side and take wheel off to have a look. Mine went iffy a few months back
