Using the composite in connection on the second image, you'll have to get some capture software and ensure you have the drivers for that device. Windows Movie maker would probably suffice.

I could get a lend of a dvd/vhs combo that can record, if i did would i need DVDRW or would DVDR do?
All i have right now are blank DVDR

This is the simplest way of doing it, and recommended if the video is a one-off, and you don't intend processing the video any further (though you could process the video off the DVD at a later date if you wish). You'll need to check the manual or the front of the player/recorder to see what DVD formats it supports, though if it's fairly new, it should support both.

To do it using the connections on your PC, you're going to need cables (video and audio) to connect it to your VCR, install and/or learn to use software to aquire and process the video, and then burn the video to a DVD. If you have access to a VCR/DVD recorder, use that.

You a have a lot of work a head of you in regards to cables, connections, software setup's, etc.

If your going to be doing this a lot I'd suggest buying something like this instead: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Philips-DVDR630VR-Recorder-Video-Cassette/dp/B0006AAKCM

Thats the thing, i have one of them here now(not the same make)
I tried it and it burnt something to the DVD but a DVD player or the PC can't read it.

Heres a pic of the back on the vhs/dvd combo.

Have you checked the burn settings to make sire that discs are not left "open"?
In other words, left so that more can be added to it later.
Look for a setting that says "Close" or "finalise" (words to that effect) the disk after burn.
That sometimes solves the problem. If a burned disc is not "closed" at burn time, it won't play in anything else for sure.

With that VCR/DVD recorder, you don't need to worry about cables, etc, maybe just a regular scart cable (or even just an RF cable) connected to the TV so you can see the menus for setting it up to record. It should then be easily set up to record from VHS to DVD, even without the manual, but have it at hand in case you're having problems.

What I did and it worked fine was connecting the video to the television via scart and then another scart or cable connected to the DVD recorder from the television

Press play on the video and record onto the DVD might be slow but it works and then I just edited the DVD on the computer.
