What a load of sanctimonious, self serving claptrap from Louis Bayliss... At what stage did it become the State's responsibility to provide babysitting facilities for her ?

    A fan of Jim Power?

So the child should suffer ?

The Single Parent payment also includes people who are separated, Widows and Widowers. I agree that some people make a choice to have children so they can access local authority housing etc but I believe more needs to be done to chase fathers for maintenance like they do in the UK.

I'm stunned Power just said that, just stunned. What an utter ****.

    Not entirely unrelated.
Anyone listening to Cal Thomas on Matt Cooper today defending Warren Buffett being taxed less than his secretary.

Jesus, at least Power is coherent.

Very disappointed in Donal Donovan - he used to work for the IMF and usually his articles are very good.

By the way, I am delighted we are not in the same boat as Portugal.

Yes, but why do they advocate wage cuts?

(Or more specifically a reduction in labour costs).

Does he not know how much these things grew in 2000s? Can Ciaran really say that our unemployment woes now have nothing to do with a reduction in our competitiveness?

If we really operate by behaving like this (i.e. scepticism and childish anger) everytime a necessary (but unpalatable) option then we will never get anywhere.

He is after talking shyte about single parents there. People do not choose to be abandoned, for their husbands/partners to die etc. Poor stuff.

Jim talking 'shyte'? Don't be ridiculous.
Sure aren't we currently enjoying the 'soft-landing' that Jim predicted.

I know many young girls who decide to have babies and become single parents

Some of them are in very shaky relationships, and some of them are single. They become pregnant instead of going to college. They do this because they know they will get many benefits, and a house. The government is trying to discourage this as a lifestyle choice and I have to agree with them. Not only is it a burden on tax payers, it makes these girls/women dependent on welfare instead of following their dreams. Sadly most of the women that I know who did this regretted it.

Again, this is not a generalisation. Plenty of women end up in this situation and are genuine. My point is, I do know of women who made this choice. Many of my friends from other countries are shocked that you are rewarded with a weekly benefit, and given a house in this country for having a baby while single unemployed and uneducated.

Many women are also claiming to be single while living with their partners. This needs to be addressed

Keiran Allen complaining about the wealthy...exactly how much is he pulling from his cushy job in UCD and his private book sales... He's a disgusting individual..

Power taking Ciaran to the cleaners here.

    Brown joining in too!

LMAO! He is actually saying people are hoarding their Celtic Tiger profits and using economists to defend them! He's gone mad.

So do I but we cannot generalise and cut all of them to get at some of them. Also if we want to get at the parent then why do we want to punish the child ?

Donal has been interviewed a lot since the IMF have come in to the country, but he always leaves you disappointed... Never commits to anything, never answers any direct questions and rarely gives away any information about the operations of the IMF that wouldnt be available from other sources..

Haven't had the pleasure of seeing him live until now.

EDIT: By the way I think alot of what he says is quite sensible but he is being drowned out far too easily.

Bayliss has just given Jim a Hackballscross uppercut right in the balls.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 23,718 ✭✭✭✭JonathanAnon

Using emotional hyperbole like "attacks on single mothers" does nothing to serve Bayliss' case.. And she always seems to find childcare when there's a radio/tv station prepared to put a microphone in front of her mouth..

  • Registered Users Posts: 19,351 ✭✭✭✭Harry Angstrom

Even though I was no fan of Mary Harney, she made a valid point a few years ago that young single mothers should stay at home with their parents instead of being automatically given housing. It would probably go some way to cutting down on those people who deliberately become pregnant in order to automatically get a house or a flat.

She does not think it's meaningless. It seems very emotional and relevant to me.

Oh shes going for the jugular now! Jerry Springer like, talk nonsense for 10 minutes but finish it with some below the belt comment!

That is so out of order

She doesn't seem to think at all.

Anyone can be emotional about anything but if they are given airtime on a panel show I expect some sort of tangible contribution to the debate rather than getting bitchy with the other panel members.

She defended her corner very well in fairness.
