was checking out the sister in laws car this evening, she said her dipped beam headlights stopped working on her way home. full beams are working fine and side lights and indicators are working fine.

both bulbs are intact and this car doesn't have headlight fuses and the owners manual confirms this, but it doesn't suggest what to do if your headlights stop working. logically the headlights would be in parallel anyway, so for both of them to go out at once, it must be something a bit peculiar.

does this sound like it could be a software problem? i think probably not a wiring issue seeing as they were both perfect and both went out at the once. i know that might sound bizarre, but... any suggestions welcome :)

Complete guess, but might a switch for the headlights be faulty?

I'd be thinking they are gone.

i did think that, but the switch still works all the other lights and they don't work in automatic mode either.

"they" as in what :pac:? new bulbs were tried and that made no difference.

    it's a funny one.

Did you remove a bulb and test it?

i didn't test the existing bulb, but new ones were tried in the car :)

you didn't state originally that bulbs were replaced so that's why I said they were likely gone.

    Relay surely!

I would say relay or switch. These days, each headlight has a separate fuse for safety. Strange one.

the switch is hardly just broken on the dipped beam setting and the automatic setting though surely, particularly when the automatic setting still turns the side lights and full beams on and off.

i think headlights have been fused in parallel for a long time, even thinking back to cars from the late 80's (as far back as i remember :P), it makes sense.

    fecking astra
