Any advice where to stay in Brittany?

I am thinking of going to Brittany in a June/July. We would be taking the ferry to Roscoff. I really would prefare to stay around there as opposed to traveling a huge distance. Although we would have the car I have always claimed why go on hols to spend the entire week driving! There would be 3 adults and 3 kids, one with walking difficulties. Would prefare to be out on our own as opposed to among a campsite or big complex. A villa gite, or house by the sea would be fantastic. What is the area like is there much to do, nice restaurants etc. What is the weather like in June July?

All other things being equal, you will get far better value for your money if you go in June, especially in coastal resorts.

To my mind, almost everywhere on the coast of Brittany has plenty of appeal. You have scenic stuff, good beaches, towns with charm/character, historic sites. A lot depends on the sort of holiday you want. Say how you would like to spend your time, and I will give you my opinion on places that might deliver what you want.

The weather in Brittany is not greatly different from the weather here. Think Irish summer + 2 degrees Celsius.

You'll also get better value staying at a campsite. There are some great campsites along the beach at the edge of towns.

Dinan is a great medieval town. St. Malo and Dinard are nearby upmarket seaside towns with lots of character.

The coast around Perros Guirec/Tregastel very scenic with some great beaches.

The weather is likely to be better the futher south you go.

We're trying to decide now where to stay in Brittany. We have a week booked in a campsite for week 2, but the first week we plan to stay in a Gite.

We have two active boys 5 & 7. We're bringing the bikes with us, the kids like to hang out/cycle/play on the beach if we're close to one, though that's not a pre-requisite as we are on the beach in the campsite the second week. Also, we dont mind doing a few day trips in the car from the beach if its not too far.

Not too sure where exactly to stay, hoping someone had some advice. I'm keen on a place up near Dinard, in a quiet area. My wife is keen on a place further south, just east of Quimper. Both are nice places.

The ideal scenario would be somewhere that has a private garden to hang out in, somewhere that isn't too small inside, and within walking distance for baguette in the morning, and maybe quiet enough that there would be cycle routes for kids from the house.

A lot to ask for, I know. But if anyone had any experiences of places that might meet our needs it would be great. I'm confident we can choose a good one but if someone had a personal recommendation that's always handy to get too!

For those searching we have found 1 sites really good:
http://www.homeaway.co.uk/ - tend to be French owned gites/apartments/villas
http://www.ownersdirect.co.uk/ - tend to be UK owned, and quite a few seem to have multiple dwellings in a single compound, which may or may not be your cup of tea. Often it means having better on-site facilities like a pool

Haven't time for a detailed response right now BoardsMember, but take a peek at the thread below - may offer some ideas & links to cycling routes (which are excellent throughout the region).

Think the US beckons for our Summer hols, but if it were solely up to me, it'd be Brittany every time!

How about up by St Malo and Dinard? We have found a nice looking spot on the Rance Estuary, wonder if it might be good for our requirements. Obviously if we srive another three hours south the weather might be better around St Nazaire area...

Lots of good stuff near the Rance Estuary. Both St Malo and Dinard have their plus points; there are a number of other pleasant seaside places nearby; Mont St Michel is in range; the Rance is a beautiful river; you can visit Dinan by boat; etc. etc.

Agree with others that Domaine des Ormes is good, but I don't think they have gite-style accommodation.
