New Passat - Fog Lights

I am conscious of the fact that this is a touchy subject, however it is not the usual debate I am trying to stir. We have a few new Passats in the fleet and I have noticed that the front fog lights are turned on with all of them when they are driving...I thought initially it was a case of the 'usual', however I have just got one and it appears that the default auto lights turn on these fogs during the day as standard. One of the lads got a bollicking off some oul fella for having them on...he didn't even realise. I'm sure there is some way of knocking them off through the computer, but it just seems strange that the factory default puts your fogs on, no?

They would be DRLS. Not fogs

DRLS = day time running lights. An EU requirement on new cars.

Eh, ignore them? It's not your fault they are all ignorant to what requirements the EU have placed on car makers. As time goes on they will become more common and perhaps peoples dislike will fade.

I've personally never suffered issues over them in our work car. Then again I'm in a Mondeo which is an LED strip.

Take no notice of them. Them lights aren't exactly dazzling in fairness.

On the 2012 Passat the DRLs are a sequence of bright lights running above the bumper along the edge of the headlamps. Fogs are below the bumper.

They might be above the bumper on the 2012 model but on the 2011 model I'm driving the DLR's are located under the front bumper beside the fog lights. I have been asked a couple of times by the Gardai at check points to "switch off my fogs"... A quick demonstration shows them that they're not the fogs but DLR's

Why would you want to turn them off? They could save your life one day.

There's probably a checkbox for "Drive On Sides In Torrential Rain" too.

More so save the life of a pedestrian but I get what you're saying. It's a bit like turning off your airbag if you ask me because you just don't like the idea of it.

They are there for a reason and IMO you shouldn't be able to turn them off. Volvo have had them.for years without issue.

I thought the EU rule was that they couldn't be turned off? That's what I've been told in the past anyway.

As did I but a VW owner appears able to disable them.

Was the "new" model Passat launched before the EU directive came in to effect? Might have been and that's why there is an option to turn them off.

Checked a similar thing on an new model A5 and as it's a facelift, it's technically classed as a new model and falls under the EU directive, so there is no longer an option to turn them off via the on board computer. No one ever came back to see if it could be done via VAGCOM.

EDIT - just checked a new Passat and the option to turn off the DRL's is in the "lights and vision" part of the setup menu on the MFD.
