In what sort of distance? What route have you planned?

    Possibly;
    Slaughter/Lug./Wicklow G. & possibly back up Glenmacnass / sofa / remote.
    On the road before 8am.

    Actually probably not. Snow dependant.

That works out at a pretty massive distance!

I got in 1800m of climbing in 110km last sunday, just worked it out and you could get 2100m of climbing in 130km if you done the same route but with 2 repeats of Shay Elliott.

Up stocking lane or cruagh road to the sally gap, down to laragh, out to shay elliott (for 2 repeats if you want 2100m), back up through laragh to the sally gap, swing a left at the crossroads down towards manor kilbride, out onto the n81 and back via ballinascorney.

    Just an idea for ya:)

Anyone else for the pain cave? Start monday @ 8.

Yes, it's going to be very boring and very tough to be in the same place for so many hours. I am not planning any stops (apart from nature stops/refill), eat and drink on the bike.

    So, anyone up?

Ye are all sick and in dire need of medical help.

If you were going to do the altitude and the distance, why not do it over a proper long spin in Wicklow instead?

I mean that you could probably do a 140 km spin that would take in Three rock, Kilmashogue, Cruagh, Bohernabreena, Glassamucky, Kilakee and Kippure mast. At least that way one would have some variety in the climbing.

Not sure how long it will take me, but I am planning to have lunch on the bike just in case :p It's not going to be fast, it will be survival mode.

its the symetry in the profile that I like. Up Down, Up Down, Up Down etc.

3 Rock would get you a similar level of elevation over 95km. Just saying.

Not so much of a loop, more just climbing and descending...

I don't know if you can take the loop to the left when you come into the first carpark, any time I've been there over the past month I usually only go straight, like on the route I mapped on ridewithgps

Easter Monday looks like being a cool, windy and quite a wet day, with heavy showers or longer spells of rain. Winds will be strong and gusty westerly.

I have taken the route plan suggested at the beginning of this thread.

    What are peoples views.

My tuppence worth is that day 3 is too long with too much climbing and day 4 is too short. If we could find suitable accommodation, I wouldn't mind hacking 30km off of day 3 and adding to day 4.

Worry is that day 3 becomes a 15 hour day. In either case I think that day 3, not day 2 will be the toughest day. While the Tourmalet is unrelenting, we will have a fairly descent amount of recovery time once we finish that day.

So maybe that works. Long day/short day/long day/short day.

I am fine with anything really, but I think Captain has already booked the accommodation?

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,484 ✭✭✭manafana

yeah accom seems to have been booked, i do think the route lenghts are bit off, first two days seem fine but others bit unbalanced. I did 85km of mostly climbing at weekend and was still off the climbing of a tourmalet.

Back to more flat riding now to build up the miles.

accomadation is booked allready. Deposits paid in some cases.

My maths may not be great, but adding the elevation totals in those maps, (including aubisque) gives about 15500 metres of climbing. Thats much better than the 11000 i originally thought :)

Cool. Thanks for that. I guess Long day/short day/long day/short day is fine.

I suppose on the two long days that we will stop twice or even three times for lunch, refuel, water etc etc? I think the key to these things is to keep eating and drinking (small amounts) throughout the day.

I terms of altitude gained, the Ride with GPS setting is poor. It significantly over calculates meters gained.
For example, day 3 RWGPS calculates 5655m. However if you just manually calculate each climb on basis of end altitude minus start altitude you get about 3300m.

    Hi,
No not ideal but I did ring hotels and hostels in other places and they were either booked or charging too much. I spent a lot of time ringing hotels in France .

Going to give it "hills" tomorrow morning early. Burrow Rd. Devils Elbow, The Wall, Old Long Hill, Lug. Laragh and hopefully back up Glenmacnass. Didn't do alot last weekend :-\

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 3,911 Mod ✭✭✭✭Planet X

That doesn't sound enough actually so I'll have to pop up Wicklow Gap I reckon aswell. :-*

Saturday morning, just after 7am. Thunder storm just passing over in the last half hour here. Tea & toast / bed for the next while. Phew! Thought I had to go out in that!
Maybe Club spin at 10am. then.

Yep, went out with a few clubmates and went around a few hills. We split up near Ashford, one of the lads racing Vets tomorrow morning. I decided to visit the Devils Glen. First time in at least 3 years. About 8 minutes in 34 X 27 of agony with a bit of zig zagging thrown in by necessity. Then a nice 20 odd mile spin home with that nippy NE headwind on my own.
    Just over 4 hours.
