Laptop cpu problem

I have a compaq laptop which is about 2 years old now and up until recently it was working fine.

However recently it has slowed way way down, I went through all the software checks I could for virus's, malware and spyware and check the settings for windows and all that and everything is fine.

I then found out there that the cpu is running very slowly, it comes up as only having 700mhz when it is a 1800mhz processor.

I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on why this could be happening, or point me in the right direction as to where to look.

    Thanks in advance

Check your heatsink. It's possible it might be clogged with dust, causing the CPU to run hot and downclock itself
