Why oh why is Tuffy not asking Boyd Barrett why he refused to condemn Mick Wallace for tax evasion the other week... The guy is a complete hypocrite... Giving out about Reilly serves his agenda...

This has been awful stuff. Barrett would have his ass kicked by Rabbitte, instead he beat up a squirrel.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,614 ✭✭✭ArtSmart

re: Reilly. strange one. it's an area he knows about, so logical to be involved in nursing home.

But being minister for health and HSE policy....

anyway, it inevitable Labour should lose around 10/11 seats min, being squeezed by SF on side and the indeps the other. Thing is, they may lose double that the way things are going.

Which will leave a FG/FF and inds govt.

Labour. ye just gotta laugh between the tears sometime.

Fair enough - but the Reilly situation is much more serious. The Minister for Health has a large investment in private nursing homes and at the same time is making cuts to the provision of public beds in nursing homes.
His sleight of hand by getting his solicitor to act as a middle man was a bit disingenuous too?

This is ridiculous... No balance at all... And Tuffy isnt strong enough to put Rich Boy back in his box... yeah Richard give away more houses for free, encourage a few more people to pack in their jobs so they qualify for a free house.. And then have them ringing the council every day trying to get the pyrite fixed on the taxpayers bill.
yes, of course. people will 'pack up their jobs' to get a free house. simples.

Johnny, I expect better man. :)

btw, what was Mick's speil on the tax thingy, i've been out of touch.

Ah I know you cant make a direct link between the two... but for some who would be borderline, it would certainly be an incentive to stay on the dole...

Yeah but the man is full of contradictions... Didnt he negotiate one of those lucrative deals for the doctors with the Government (when he was a GP), and now he is trying to unravel it..

He came out wearing sackcloth and ashes... made an emotional speech in the Dáil.... And then said he was going away to Poland to watch the football.. :pac: (he ended up not going as far as I know)

He was very clear about Wallace.
Mick Wallace’s failure to pay VAT collected on the sale of apartments and false VAT declaration is entirely unacceptable. He should pay these monies back to the revenue, by instalment if necessary, as would be the case with any social welfare recipient or worker who was over-paid or who had defrauded the state. Mr Wallace should not be able to hide behind corporate law or “limited liability” in his obligation to re-pay this money. The public are entirely right to be outraged when different laws and standards apply to politicians or capitalists than those that apply to ordinary citizens and we share this outrage.

Tuffy should go to a voice coach or singing teacher, the way she gasps for breath after every sentence is very off putting on TV and hints at a panic attack.

If she is the new generation to replace the old men of Rabbitte and Quinn, Labour should just give up. lightweight and easily bullied.

    Bottler's debt default tonight.

I bet Mick Wallace is relieved that that spotlight is now on someone else.

If Bottler had all these details why didn't he just release this as a press statement? All said Ireland is a small enough country that someone didn't give him or his FG press handlers the Billy-O that his name was going to turn up in Stubbs this week.

9:55 on a Wednesday night, great turn out by the FG TDs, how come its so empty the rest of the week?

The statement was read out in the Dáil so it means he is covered by Dáil privilege.

What does Dail privilege entitle him to?

Very poor turn out by Labour tonight it seems.

You can't be sued for anything that is said while in the Dáil.

I wish TV3 would turn on subtitles when Damien English speaks.

But you can't be sued when you speak the truth, everyone knows Bottler speaks the truth.

I think what can damage him is that one of his fellow debtors is Cllr Anne Devitt, she of planning services sideline.

The more pressure the ironically named Damien English comes under the more incoherent he becomes.

But he is the crack to listen to no matter what ****e he says.

He owns the SuperValu in Lusk, well the building and various retail units. Don't know if he owns the franchise.

    Agreed.

However, I will give him marks for appearing on the show. His leader, Mr. Kenny and some of his government colleagues haven't the b@lls to face Vinny.

Someone said it would have been o.k. if Reilly hadn't got the Health ministry. But he couldn't get Tourism either as he has a big mansion which he opens to the public twice yearly as a tourist attraction and gets huge tax breaks for. He is also a property speculator so can have nothing to do with planning either.
Fisheries might have suited him though. He looks a bit like Captain Birdseye.

Can't be doing that, his house in Rush is a beach front property.

    For hire: Minister's tax-relief mansion
Weddings held at stately pile but no change in rules

By Fionnan Sheahan and Eimear Ni Bhraonain
    Wednesday April 27 2011

HEALTH Minister James Reilly and his wife are hiring out their stately home for weddings and christenings while also receiving tax breaks for maintaining it.

And last night, it emerged that Finance Minister Michael Noonan has no immediate plans to change the tax relief for owners of historic mansions.

Dublin North TD Mr Reilly and his wife, Dorothy, who own Laughton House in Moneygall, Co Offaly, are among the wealthy business people who take advantage of the tax break to maintain their residences.

The relief is given to help cover maintenance and restoration costs for significant buildings and gardens. It was intended to help owners meet costs, remain in the houses and prevent them becoming derelict.

A spokesman for the Department of Finance said all reliefs were subject to ongoing pre-budget reviews.

The rules for the tax relief were tightened up last year. A review conducted by the Department of Finance five years ago concluded that keeping the scheme "seems the most reasonable option".
