Mast cell tumour treatment in dogs

Our dog has a mast cell tumour on one of his back legs, upper thigh. We've kept an eye of it since it was diagnosed last summer. It is now about the diameter of a golf ball and protrudes about 2cm above the skin. He's a five year old bull mastiff. Over the past couple of months it has increased in volume and now we've noticed two other possible tumours on the joints of his front legs. The vet had a look at him when the thigh tumour was first noticed and was equivocal about treating him by surgery given his size (55kg), the discomfort he'd experience and the tendency for these tumours to recur. Two questions: Has anyone had MCTs removed from their dog successfully? Are some breeds more susceptible to MCTs than others?
