I came across this earlier in the night and it's a really bonkers one that takes a while to read.

    The Mystery of Room 1046

It is a really weird one that has nearly everything thrown in! A guy carrying no luggage checks into a hotel in 1935 in Kansas.Puts his name as Roland Owen.Acts weird and is seen by maids at various times sitting in the dark and lying naked on the bed. Seems to be waiting on someone. A man and woman visit and then leave.

Eventually the hotel workers go in and find the guy almost dead having been tortured. He says nothing happened but dies soon after.Suicide ruled out as room has been cleared of stuff like clothes and murder weapon.

Then there is more weirdness.A guy says he talked to the victim the day before on the street when he would have been seen if he left the hotel.A wrestling promoter says he thinks the victim contacted him wanting to do wrestling matches. Then the funeral home gets a call saying the victims funeral is being paid anonymously saying "Love for ever- Louise"

Then a year later, a mother recognises his photo saying the victims name is Artemus Ogletree!! She definitely recognised him as he had a distinctive scar on his head.

To top all this off, recently a guy who was looking at the case gets a call from someone who says they are going through a recently deceased persons stuff. They had found a box of clippings so the person had followed the case. They said something mentioned in the clippings was also in the box but wouldn't say what it was.

The whole thing is utterly bizarre and maybe the last bit was just someone winding the researcher up but I have only just skimmed the facts.

Maybe it was a sadomasochistic thing that went too far is my rough guess.

These are the two articles and they are long but good reads! Part one and Part two.

So many - i love true crime/unsolved mysteries.

The ones i find most fascinating are the ones that probably have a very logical conclusion but i would just like to know what happened.

    -Maura Murray
    -Lisanne Froon & Kris Kremers
    -Johnny Gosch
-All the missing women in Ireland from around the same period/region
The Daily Beast did an article on the disappearance of Froon and Kremers. It's based on leaked files from the Panamanian investigation and seems to be the most likely scenario. The thought of what they must have gone through is awful. If they had just let someone know where they were going before they left, they would probably have been found, but the search parties didn't know where to go and therefore did a superficial survey of all the popular tourist trails. No one imagined that they would have been foolhardy enough to go off the trail.

Okay so this isn't an unsolved mystery anymore...

... but the abduction of 11-year old Jacob Wetterling in October 1989 remained unsolved for nearly 27 years.

The Wikipedia page is here, but far more interesting and worthwhile to read is the comprehensive investigation from journalists at APM Reports.
It was around 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 22, 1989, when 11-year-old Jacob Wetterling put on his red hockey jacket and left his house to bike to the video store in the dark with his younger brother and his best friend.

It was just a short bike ride on a dead-end street that led from the edge of the small town of St. Joseph in central Minnesota to the brown split-level house where Jacob lived with his mom, dad, brother and two sisters.

But Jacob never made it home.

On the way back, a masked man appeared on the road. He grabbed Jacob and told the other boys to run and not look back.

What happened that night would lead to one of the largest and longest law enforcement investigations in the history of the United States. The case involved nearly 100 officers from the FBI, the state crime bureau, the Stearns County Sheriff's Office and the National Guard — along with thousands of volunteers who combed the cornfields and ditches in rural Minnesota.

The Wetterling case went unsolved for nearly 27 years, until four months ago, when a man facing 25 counts of child pornography confessed to the crime as part of a plea deal and led authorities to Jacob's remains.

APM Reports have made a podcast called In The Dark about the child abduction (I'm currently halfway through listening to it and it's fascinating).

Dyatlov Pass is the one that gets me everytime...... I've read all the internet articles about it and watched the documentaries and nobody still really knows how it happened. To make it more scary, an unidentified body was found there only a few days ago!

The Dyatlov pass was named after the leader of the hiking group that went missing, Igor Dyatlov. The group consisted of graduate students from of the Ural Polytechnic Institute. Their plan was to trek 350 kilometers on skis through the forests and Northern Urals to Mount Otorten (which is translated from the local Mansi language as ‘Don’t go There’). Initially there were 10 people in the group, but one of the hikers fell ill and was forced to abandon the venture.

On February 12, 1959 the nine failed to report to the scheduled end-point at a village called Vizhay. As a result of rescue efforts, the group’s tent was found on the slope of the Mount Kholat Syakhl (“Mountain of the Dead” in Mansi) on February 26. Investigators later determined that tent had been was cut with a sharp object from the inside.

The skiers also left all their belongings in the tent while apparently trying to urgently flee the campsite. After following footprints down the hill for about 1.5 km – some of those fleeing were wearing only socks, some were even barefoot – the search party found five bodies.

Some of the hikers were wearing only underwear and their bodies showed signs of struggle such as fractured skulls and broken ribs. One of the women had her tongue missing. The search for the remaining four travelers who were located further into the woods took more than two months.

The Soviet criminal investigation in 1959 failed to establish the causes of the incident. The final report said that an "unknown compelling force" killed the people.

The incident which remains one of the most chilling unsolved mysteries of the 20th century sparked many theories in which investigators attempted to rebuild the chronology of events. The numerous explanations put forward included an avalanche, military tests seen by the hikers that the government was trying to hide, a hostile encounter with an unknown creature, or paranormal activity.

The mystery of the Dyatlov Pass incident has inspired filmmakers to make a science fiction horror movie entitled ‘Devil’s Pass’ where five students investigate the incident.

I think I read another theory where hypothermia was put forward. I only vaguely remember it but apparently it can cause delirium as well as make you feel like you're too hot shortly before death. The person suggested that one or more started to see things, attack the others, the person with the injuries may have had a bad fall while running in the dark. They suggested small scavengers as a reason that one woman didn't have her tongue as it would be the softer and most easily accessible flesh for them.

It's both fascinating as a murder/mystery story and very saddening in that it took so long for this crime to be solved and it practically ruined an innocent man's life (Dan Rassier). The take-home message is that the sheriff, police force, and FBI all did a really shít job.

Yes, always thought it was a (relatively) straightforward case of going off the main trail and getting hopelessly lost. The Daily Beast article theorises that the dark photos were taken when the heavy rains were coming in and Lisanne knew she had to try leave their "camp" and so took photos of the terrain for future reference. Investigators were able to identify the area because of the photos. The theory is that Kris had fallen and died at the river crossing visible in one of the shots. Nightmarish to imagine being in sight of your friend's body for days with no food and no idea of the way out.

It's a very sad story all right. It's terrible to think how long they were out there with at least one of them still alive. It's somehow much more tragic than if they'd just had an accident on day one to know that they could have been rescued, and indeed were doing everything they could to get help.

Not a mystery in the sense that we know what happened...just not the how or why. How do you persuade 900 people to kill each other, their children and themselves?

    Blows my mind!

My big issue with a lot of these stories is people try too hard to find the supernatural in them.
The logical explanation is a spark flew out of the fire and an elderly man was unable to move quickly enough to stop it before it engulfed him and he most likely fell sometime during the incident which would explain why he was found face down in-front of his fireplace.
Instead of that there`s a half wit/attention seeking under-worked Coroner in West Galway who labels it "Spontaneous combustion". Cue a Wiki page and its a mystery.

They didn't all drink the cool aid. I think a sizeable number of people who declined were shot

It's not really a mystery if you understand mass psychosis/cult behaviour taken to extremes.

The explanation usually given is that of a human candle.

Obese drunk smoker falls asleep. Clothes smoulder. Person too drunk / carbon monoxide gets them. Then heat from burning clothes melts subcutaneous fat and acts as a wick. Takes several hours to burn the person (it's not that spontaneous) Heat rises so only top half of room destroyed, carpet , feed , even papers on the floor are undamaged.

They've done proof of concept with pig carcases.

Just a reminder that this incident took place during the Cold War when wandering near military bases wasn't recommended.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_events_in_the_Cold_War#1958
    1958
August: Thor IRBM deployed to the UK, within striking distance of Moscow.
September: A US reconnaissance C-130 airplane is shot down over Armenia by Mig-17s, with 17 casualties.[7]
November: Start of the second Berlin crisis, Nikita Khrushchev asks the West to leave Berlin.
    1959
January 1: Cuban Revolution. Fidel Castro becomes the leader of Cuba although refrains from declaring the country Communist. Cuban-inspired guerrilla movements spring up across Latin America.

People are easier to lead in groups I'd say. The fact that they were prepared tp go there with him at all suggests they were already far enough down his pathway.

What happened to Kym Owens? The Monaghan student was badly injured in Dublin in November and is still in a coma.
Guards have no idea what happened.
She may have had a fall, Been hit by a car, Attacked. No one knows.
Seeing as she suffered severe head injuries i wouldn't hold at any hope of her being able to tell what happened, if/when she regains consciousness.
