Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

Smoke from chimney re-entering the house

    Hello there,

    maybe someone can advise me. I live in a 2-up/2-down with a solid fire. Lit it this evening for the first time in a couple of weeks and went upstairs to smell smoke residue in upstairs bedroom.

    Should I be concerned? I swept the chimney in the autumn so I don't know what's wrong or what's causing this.

    Any ideas???

    The fireplace in the bedroom is boarded up and hasn't been used in years (living memory)

    Yes, you should certainly be concerned. Sweep the chimney again & see if anything comes down.
    Do a flue flow test with smoke pellets.
    Check the room ventilation to see nothing has changed, such as blocked for draughts, perhaps cavity wall insulation installed & now blocking the vent.

    Thanks will sweep it again.

    There's not too much ventilation in that room. It's not used much...hmm...

    Should I sweep from there to the chimney pot too? Wouldn't hurt, I suppose, would it?

    Do not use fire again till its properly inspected by a chimney repair Co. useing a CCTV camera.

    High risk of carbon monoxide anywhere smoke is escaping.
